Scouting the Clarendon Lions

Posted Thursday, September 17, 2009, at 9:25 AM

Friday night the Piggott Mohawks will wrap-up their non-conference schedule with a home game against the Clarendon Lions. Last year the Tribe visited Clarendon and posted a 24-0 win in just three quarters, as the contest was called early in the fourth when a Lion's player was injured.

Junior running back Trey Morgan initially had no feeling in his legs after his helmet came in contact with the knee of Corbin Chase of the Mohawks. The game was called, and after about an hour an Air-Evac helicopter landed on the field to remove the injured Lion. Morgan was taken to Children's Hospital in Little Rock, and thankfully walked out of the facility the following morning with nothing more than a huge headache.

The Lions are currently 2-0 after beating Brinkley 28-26 in week one, and last week they got by the Barton Bears 34-25.

The pre-season coaches poll had them finishing fourth in the 2A-6 conference behind the Hazen Hornets, Des Arc Eagles and Carlisle Bison and ahead of Marvell, Hughes and Pal-Wheatly.

They return four starters on offense, including quarterback Chase Jilian who passed for over 700 yards last year, and have five starters back on defense.

Team speed shouldn't be a problem for the Tribe, and the Mohawks have the advantage along both the offensive and defensive lines.

If the throng of Piggott running backs have another good night, led by junior workhorse Alek Samples, it should be win number one of the season for the Mohawks.

Tim, remind Mohawk coach that on Sept.22 will be the 70th anniversary of night football in Piggott. First night home game was Sept.22, 1939, and sorry to say we lost to Marked Tree 6-0
