Scouting the Earle BulldogsPosted Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 10:29 AM
This week the Piggott Mohawks make the long drive to Earle for a conference contest with the unbeaten Bulldogs. Coming off last week's 0-20 conference opener at Cave City it would be nice to get a break, but in the tough 3A-3 conference those are few and far between.
This year the Bulldogs are ranked in the top five 3A teams in Arkansas after jumping out to a record of 4-0 in impressive fashion. Last season the Bulldogs finished with a record of 9-3, losing to Lavaca 32-49 in the second round of the playoffs. This year Earle has dominated their first four opponents, and the Mohawks will be looking to keep the football out of the hands of their explosive offense. In week one they beat Conway Christian 44-24, and followed that up with a 40-0 shut-out of Marvell in week two. They hosted the Hughes Blue Devils in week three and pounded them 68-8, and last Friday night they traveled to Corning and handed the Bobcats a 65-6 loss. Last year all-state running back Mike Wilson carried the bulk of the load, rushing for over 1,900 yards and 17 touchdowns. During the spring Michael Bowles transferred from Cross County, another all-state running back who had 1,934 yards rushing last year. The duo, combined with several other talented RB's and a strong O-line has accounted for the big scores put up by the Bulldogs this year. The team, which many are now picking to win the conference, also has good size and speed on defense and special teams. Again, the key to keeping the score close for the Tribe will be keeping the Earle offense on the sideline with sustained drives. Kick-off is set for 7:30 at Earle, and the high school is located just east of the city on U.S. Highway 64. |
