Young Mohawks on a roll

Posted Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at 11:16 AM

The Piggott Mohawks may be a young team, compared to some of the competition that they've taken on recently--but don't call them inexperienced.

The lone senior on the squad is third baseman Trent Edwards, while the bulk of the roster is comprised of a talented group of underclassmen--many of which have been playing together for years.

Many of those core players were members of junior and senior Little League teams that competed at the highest level, including trips to state, regional and national tournaments.

The kids are now battle-tested, and as I said earlier this year, aren't going to be concerned playing a team from the other side of the state. They've played, and won, over teams comprised of the best that can be gleaned from entire regions.

It's a long drive to Harrison, but I have a feeling that the Mohawks are going to leave their mark on the bracket this weekend. They'll play a number four seed Friday, and with a win will compete again Saturday.

The Mohawks play in a tough conference, so they've faced hard games all year and are better because of it. The also have a couple of quality losses, if such a thing exists, including a tight game with the Westside Warriors late in the season.

I would wish them good luck, or at least ask that the baseball gods smile down upon them. But, considering the fact that the rolled through what is arguably the toughest regional in the state, outscoring their opponents 22-4, I'd say they only need a little luck.

They've earned everything they've gotten, way to go guys.
