Enjoyed the Fireworks

Posted Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 12:09 PM

Well, did you all have a good 4th of July? It seems like half the town left to go to one lake or another. Fireworks really are prettier over the water, aren't they? I got a rather good show from my own front porch. Neighbors set off some beautiful fireworks just down the street and of course there were others to be seen here and there. My dogs and I sat on the front steps to watch. The cats chose to watch from under various pieces of furniture deep inside the house where there were no windows, not really fireworks fans, I guess.

That's one advantage to not having all those tree limbs and leaves in the way. Nothing to get between our eyes and the lights in the sky. Anyway, thanks to whoever provided me with such a delightful display and for doing so safely. I loved it.

Ms. Pauline Shields had company this past week. Her niece, Judy Jefferies drove down from Fenton MO. Judy is a Methodist minister and has just received a new church home so she came to share her joy with her Aunt Pauline. She delighted Pauline by taking her out to do a little shopping and they had a nice long visit.

I guess you have noticed the flamingoes are back. The United Methodist Youth are the group responsible. I hope you consider yourself very special when they end up in your yard. They only visit the very most nicest people of all, you know. Having said that, they had better make it to our yard soon!

What is with all these escaped convicts, lately? Is there some kind of contest going on we don't know about? Every week some other escapees are featured on the news and some of them are really scary looking too. Crime and mayhem apparently appeals to some ugly dudes. Y'all be careful, now and keep your doors locked. That would apply to jailers too.

Remember the Doo Wop band I talked about last week? I am going to keep them on your mind. Their next performance will be at the Collins Theater on Nov 13-14, so we have time to make plans. They will do about 40 songs that will take you right back to "The Good Old Days". Here are a few, just to tease you a little bit: "Midnight Hour", "Leader of the Pack", "Ain't That A Shame" and "The Stroll". Do you remember how to do the stroll? Well, you had better practice up.

Of course, we still have the Gaither concert coming up in just a few weeks. And that will be right here in Rector at the new school gymnasium. We are talking air conditioning and comfortable stadium seating and some of the best gospel singing in the world, so run, don't walk, to get your tickets. Now!! Hurry, before they are all gone.!! Not only will you have a wonderful time with world class entertainment, the proceeds go to a very good cause, RHS Helping Hands Foundation.

Time to get this wrapped up and into the paper. I hope you are having a wonderful summer vacation. Come on and share your news with the rest of us. We want to know.

My address is 514 West 3rd St. Phone: (870) 595-3173 and email: porchswing@newwavecomm.net.

Keep our soldiers in your prayers. Bye Now!!
