Roll Out Those Lazy Crazy Hazy Days of Summer

Posted Monday, May 24, 2010, at 1:08 PM

Good day to you all! May is almost gone and we are getting a little taste of summer, aren't we? Temperatures are in the 90's and the humidity is creeping upwards. White fluffy clouds hint at the occasional pop up thunder storm. Swimming pools and wading pools are opening up all around us and the hum of air conditioners competes with the chatter of squirrels and birds and the buzz of insects.

The nights are beautiful, fragrant and balmy and decorated with sparkling stars and a bright, bright moon. Take a moment to walk outside just before bed time and spend a few minutes basking in the night sky. Let the universe embrace you. It is really awesome.

Yep summer is just around the corner. You know what else that means. SCHOOL'S OUT! It is summer vacation time! Children are released from the rigors of education. Teachers are relieved of their weighty responsibilities. Let the fun begin!

Pastor Velda Bell of the First United Methodist Church and her daughter Susie recently enjoyed a visit from Velda's sister and her husband. Marie and Tim Biss who live in Midland, NC (that's NASCAR country, you know) came to see their favorite niece graduate from high school. They set a leisurely pace on their way here, with Tim riding his Harley and Marie driving a van with their three dogs, two chow mixes and a cocker spaniel.

Rock, the cocker spaniel managed to escape pretty quick after they got here and took his own unguided tour of Rector. This enabled Marie and Tim to meet several Rectorites as they searched for him. Paula Benton finally located him and through the wonders of cell phone magic managed to get Marie over to persuade the reluctant Rock to come back to the parsonage.

During the week they spent in Rector, they met many of you as they were at the graduation ceremony and Velda and Susie were constantly showing them around. They enjoyed eating at Bowden's restaurant and went to church with Velda and Susie.

They also took a trip to Alma to see where Velda will be moving in June and enjoyed visiting that town as well. I understand that there is now a picture of Marie and Popeye somewhere. I don't know if it is on Facebook yet, but it should be.

Did you get a chance to see Joel Boyd's art exhibit at the Crockett building? I hope you did. It was spectacular! He is a gifted artist and I look forward to another exhibit sometime in the future. It was good to see Joel and to meet his wife. They will be living in Little Rock so I hope we see them here often.

Joel's mother, Janet (Greenway) Boyd and his grandmother, Linda Greenway were there of course. The Clay County Arts Council provided hors d'oeuvres and punch and much support for Joel and for his talents. See you Labor Day, Joel?

By-the-way, Janet is wanting to give a class in scrapbooking. Would you be interested. Give her a call, if you are.

If you are a Facebook user you might want to search for Yellow Elephant Boutique. It is a home based business owned by Andrea Dawn Slaton Yount of Pollard. Lots of cute hand

made items. She also does special orders so check it out.

Well, I seem to have run out of stuff to say so perhaps it is time to close. Let me hear from you. I always enjoy your news and your stories. So please, stay in touch. My address is 514 West 3rd St. Phone: (870) 595-3173 and email: porchswing@newwavecomm.net.

Keep our soldiers in your prayers.
