First Annual Poker Run is Saturday

Posted Monday, June 21, 2010, at 12:25 PM

This heat is really getting old. I am into whining overdrive. The worst part is the seven day forecast doesn't look any better. I can't even begin to think of what July and August will bring.

Barbara McKeel provided a breath of fresh air for us as she was in town for a few days last week. As usual she spent some time researching for her column. She and her mother, Jean managed to spend a lot of quality time together as well.

Jessie Malin sneaked out of town to spend a few days with her son Steve at his lake house on Kentucky Lake. Didn't even bother to say good-by, she just left on a whim. Those are sometimes the best mini vacations.

You know that Wilton Inez McDonald passed last week. She was the sister of the late Donald McCluney of Rector. Many members of her family gathered to bid her farewell. There were Watson and Francis Light from West Helena, Bob and Rita McDonald from Fredericksburg, VA and Philip and Sherry Thompsen of West Chester, PA. William and Charlene McDonald were here from Paragould as was Loyell Laffoon.

Anna Louise Thompson was also here and Patsy McDonald from West Memphis and LaFern Daugherty and Lori Telgen from Kennett. Bobby and Linda House came from Houston, TX. Joyce Mitchem and her daughter Carolyn Brown drove over from Pocahontas. Brenda Miller came from Dickinson, TX and Barry A. Steenbergen came from Crowly, TX with his son Barry Don and his wife, Missy.

Debra Weisenstein came from Bedford MA and Margarette Weisenstein came from St. Charles. Barbara and Bill Watham came from Fort Worth, TX. And Karen Roach from Lake St. Louis, Mr. Dr. James Carroll, who officiated at the service came from Hazelwood, MO with his wife, Joy. Mrs. McDonald will be missed. Her daughters, Barbara Watham and Margarette Weisenstein were very glad to have so many family members gathered to show their love.

I know you won't want to miss the 1st Annual Veterans Memorial Park Poker Run on Saturday, June 26 right here in Rector at the Memorial Park. The proceeds will all go to the Rector Veterans Memorial Fund. Registration begins at 9:00am with the first bike out at 10:00. Be there or be square. It will be a lot of fun!!

Okay, who is going on vacation? I want to hear all about it. My address is 514 West 3rd St. Phone: (870) 595-3173 and email: porchswing@newwavecomm.net. Y'all stay cool I am heading outside to do a rain dance. Later, after it cools off a bit.

God bless our soldiers. I hope we can get them home safely sometime soon.
