School Has StartedPosted Monday, August 23, 2010, at 12:39 PM
Here we are almost at the end of August already. It has been the hottest and driest summer since I moved here in 1994. I see happy little boles of cotton popping out all around us, the corn is being cut and the rice is getting golden. I can the feel the farmers gearing up to harvest as soon as the crops are ready. They deserve a really good year for a change and this could be it. Y'all harvest quickly now before it starts to rain.
We have had some cooler weather. Low 90's are cooler than low 100's. I keep dreaming of running through snowflakes. Well, of course you know that running is sort of stretching it for me, but I will really be happy when I can feel a bit of a chill without standing in front of the freezer with the door open. School has officially begun! You can hear those text books cracking from my house. I have a visual of all those little heads opening up and knowledge just pouring into them. There is so much learn, more today than when I was a child. And learning is different too. Technology has changed what we learn as well as how we learn it. Let me tell you, kids. You will never stop learning. You will eventually quit going to school and college, but there will always be something out there waiting to jump into your head. So learn how to learn now and you will never stop. One more thing. Have fun in school. Make friends. Be a friend. Take a chance on something good. Step up when you need to and step back when you need to. The most important thing you will learn in school is how to make decisions and you will make good ones and bad ones. Just find the lesson in all of them. Now when is the first school party? Jessie Malin, Carol Stone and I were at the Ultimate Oldies Show on Friday evening, as was a good portion of the Rector citizenship. I first spied Linda Robinson. Her sister Joy Moss from Georgia was with her. Jo Ann and Don Kirklin were there as well. I got to meet Kenneth and Alma Webb for the first time. They moved back to Rector a few months ago. Kenneth is the brother of the late Doyne Webb. Glenda and David Ozier were there too. They are currently from Jonesboro, but I'll bet you remember them from the old Rector days. We saw Shirl and Jean (McCready) Strausser. I spotted Don and Maxine Parmenter, Carolyn Seay, Martha Jane Randall, Dovie Smith, Betty Lewis, Mabel Randell and I heard that Terry and Demetra Shultz were there. Who knows who else was there that did not cross my line of vision. It was a sell-out, actually a bit of an over-sell. They opened the balcony and even seated a couple of people with the sound technician. The performance was wonderful. I love all the old songs from my high school days and they do such a good job with them. They will be back in a few months. If you haven't seen them, try to catch the next performance. It is a fun evening. I believe I have run out of things to say. We have a week and a half until Labor Day so I know there is much work afoot. Let me know what you are doing and who is coming to town. Write me at 514 W. 3rd St., Rector or call me. My phone number is 595-3173. Email address: porchswing@newwavecomm.net. Bless our soldiers. |
Christa is proud to call herself a Rector native having been born here. After living elsewhere, she just couldn't stay away! She has now lived in Rector for over 14 years. During this time, Christa has been very active in the community and is the one to go to for current happenings in the area.
