Birthdays and Musicals

Posted Monday, February 20, 2012, at 1:27 PM

Last week as wrote this column, I was watching it snow. Today the sun is shining, the birds are singing (it's amazing how putting out a little birdseed gets their attention) and it almost looks like spring. Could it be? Could spring be peeking around the corner at us?

Let me tell you what else is just around the corner. Pauline Graves Shields 99th birthday is Thursday. Yes indeed. She is 99 and just as spunky as always. If you doubt my word just go and see for yourself. She is at the NHC in Kennett and keeping them all on their toes.

That enchanting group of ladies who refer to themselves as the Mimosa Mafia made Valentine's Day special for themselves by having dinner at Genny's Kitchen. Ribeye steaks, baked potato and salad were all absolutely yummy. They sampled the desserts too The tables were decorated so beautifully. I hope they do something like that again soon. As for the Mafia, well you never know where or when they will turn up. But you can bet they will be having a good time.

It was good to see so many couples celebrating at Genny's as well. It was Valentine's Day after all. Thank you Burns family for giving us such a nice place to have such a nice dinner.

I was saddened to hear of Mae Ruth Hardin's passing. She and her husband, Ralph were among the first people I met when I moved back to Rector. I enjoyed her humor and her "Let's just get on with life" attitude. Rest well Mae Ruth. You have earned your peace.

Nelda Chadwick has announced that she will be retiring as the Director of the Rector Community Center. Nelda has been with the center from the time it was built and has done an outstanding job of keeping it up for us all. Many thanks to her for all she has done.

The Clay County Arts Council will be holding a musical event in Piggott on Sunday. The CCAC Arts Celebration will showcase talent from Clay County. There will be singing and piano and monologues. Please come to share in this afternoon program and reception. There is no admission cost and you will have an opportunity to see what the Clay County Arts Council is all about. Membership is open to all who are interested in seeing the arts flourish around us. Sunday, February 26 at 2:00 at the First United Methodist Church in Piggott. See you there!

Guess it is time to go for this week. Let me know what is going on with you. You can email me at: porchswing@newwavecomm.net or call me (870) 595-3173. You can even drop me a line at 514 West 3rd St., Rector AR. Bye for now. Stay safe and enjoy life.

Blessings to our military everywhere.
