Well it looks like the weather for Labor Day is sort of iffy, not that we dare complain with all the mess on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Not much chance it will get up here and we can deal with a little rain, I guess.
I did grow up on the Texas Coast and have a lot of friends and family there so I am glued to the television. For now, everyone is fine if not exactly stress free. The amazing thing so far is that this a catastrophic event, worse than anything experienced in this country, but with all the damage there are only two lives lost. That sounds miraculous to me in light of all the flooding and the ongoing rain. Let’s hope that doesn’t change, and pitch in any way we can to help people recover.
While here, we are charging toward Labor Day. I have updated the www.rectorarkansas.com website with the weekend schedule and flyers. If you notice anything else that needs to be added or changed, please let me know ASAP.
The Hall of Fame Golf Tournament starts at 10:30 Friday morning. At 7:00 p.m. is the “Ultimate Oldies Show” at the Rector Community Center. Tickets for that are on sale at the Rector Water Department. Call Linda Robinson or Kim Romine at 870 595-3035 for tickets and information. I am looking forward to seeing them. It is a terrific show and always draws a good crowd. General admission tickets are $15.00 and reserve seating is $20.00. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the show starts at 7:00.
The 5K run/walk starts at 8:00 a.m. at the high school on Saturday September 2. Proceeds benefit the Rector High School Helping Hands Foundation. Kim and David Romine and Heather Simmons will be hosting this event. The Hall of Fame Golf Tournament will be at noon, followed at 4:30 with the Ice Cream Social at the Rector Downtown Park. This is a laid back, family affair. The ice cream is free and the entertainment varied. Bring a chair or blanket if you want, and show up to visit and let the kids run off some of that energy. The Rector Downtown Central Committee hosts this.
Sunday kicks off the beauty pageants. Petite Miss Rector, at 2:00 p.m., Pre-teen Miss Rector at 3:00, Junior Miss Rector at 4:00 and MS Rector at 8:00.
The parade is at 9:00 on Monday morning followed immediately with Political Speeches, the Welcome and the Rector Band, the awards for longest married couple, oldest man/woman and longest distance traveled. Then the tiny, baby and little Mr. and Miss Rector Pageants. Musical entertainment from 5:00 til 8:00 when the official Miss Rector Pageant begins. The drawing for the $1000.00 will be after the Beauty Pageant. The carnival runs all day on Monday.
All proceeds from the Rector Labor Day Picnic go to the upkeep of Rector’s Woodland Heights Cemetery. Everybody come.
You can access the Rector Labor Day Picnic Facebook page as well for more information: https://www.facebook.com/groups/124099237732556/ . There will also be information on all the other events. Send me whatever you would like to see on the website and whatever you want me to include in this column. Get ready! Labor Day is almost here.
I did find out about the McNeil Opera House. I got a hold of Martha Mc Neil Downs and yes, Rector did at one time have an Opera House on Main Street. It brought world class talent to town and was frequented by people from miles around. At that time the town was hopping.
I guess I had better go now. See you Labor Day!
