Rector News from the Porch Swing
Rector Cougars-Conference Champs
By Christa Hedrick
Looking back, we had barely had a taste of winter at this time last year. It had visited other parts of the country but had left us pretty much alone. This year we have had some really cold days and nights, but not much ice (thank goodness) or snow. It was rather soothing to see the snow falling yesterday just before dark. It barely left a dusting, but it was pretty as it fell. Now we are looking at the possibility of freezing rain tomorrow and no one is even teasing about spring yet. Oh well, keep the blankets out. Winter is sticking around.
How about those Rector Cougars, Conference Champs. Way to go boys! And what a nail biter of a game. 46-45 with a last minute layup by Kirk Beshears. It was televised too by YHTC.
The Clay County Arts Council, Inc. will host their annual “Night of Chocolate” next Saturday, February 17. Dinner and a play “A Window for Murder.” What could be more fun on Valentine’s weekend. Lots of chocolate, of course and a fabulous buffet served by Traveling Wisk. Join CCAC for an unforgettable night in 1920's England - $30 for members, $35 for non-members. Call 870-595-3035 for will-call tickets and more information.
It’s Chili Cook-off time again! If you have a chili recipe you are proud of, bring it ON. The Rector Community Center is hosting their annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, February 24. The competition is fierce, and the recipes are awesome and varied. We will also be judging soup and Jambalaya. Entry fees are $25.00 and you can pick up the forms at the Rector Water Department. Call 870 595-3035 for more information. You will need to have your entries to the Community Center by 4:30 on Saturday. Judging will be at 5:00. Of course, for those of us who don’t want to cook chili that day, we get to eat chili, soup and jambalaya. $5.00 will get you a bowl of one of these delights, with a drink and a dessert. Doors open at 6:00 for dinner. This is always a good way to spend an afternoon. Proceeds benefit the Community Center.
I will continue to remind you about the Vietnam Era Veterans Welcome Home Celebration in March. The Facebook page is drawing attention. You can now order your tickets for the Jimmy Fortune Concert on the Facebook Page. Just find the Shop Now Button right under the header and it will take you to Paypal, a secure site to enter your credit card information. Tickets are also available at the Rector Water Department. If you have stories about the Vietnam War, please contact me. I would like to put some of those memories on the Facebook page and on the website: https://www.facebook.com/VietnamVeternansWelcomeHome/ https://christah8.wixsite.com/vietnamvetswelcome . Keep checking on the Facebook page and follow it for more information as it is solidified. And look for information on your favorite Vietnam-era Vet.
I guess that’s it for today. Give me a call or send me an email if there is something you would like me to write about in the column. Visitors or trips you have taken are fun to share.
