Itís May. Spring has finally staked a claim in Arkansas. We now have leaves on the trees and blooms on the flowers. You know, all those things we usually see in April. I swear I was beginning to wonder if it would ever find its way this year. It has. Everything is green and clean and we are moving on toward summer.
Today is the first day of early voting in Arkansas. Learn about the candidates and the issues and make your choices known.
Yesterday was graduation day for Rector High School students. High School Graduation, one of the first major milestones of life, always brings out the philosopher in me. The act of walking across that stage to receive that piece of paper seems to carry you from one place in your life to another. It changes you, just as you change the tassel from one side of your head to the other, you are changed from a school child, to an adult.
Many of you will continue your education with college or trade school and the coming years will step you into new roles again and again. Others will also continue to step into new roles as they join the military or the work force. I any case you will be making decisions for yourself now. Mom and Dad will not be checking your homework anymore and they probably wonít be pushing you out the door if you are going to work, although some do still need a nudge to get the day started. You will learn that your life from this point forward will be your responsibility, with a lot of help from those around you.
Regardless of your direction from here on, it is your journey. I hope youíre excited about it. There is so much ahead of you. You are going to find your own pathway and create your own future. You will stumble along the way and you may change direction, but even if you donít feel like it, you will continue. You are going to do wonderful things you have not yet imagined. Prepare to be amazed at the things you will accomplish. Prepare to be amazed at the person you will become.
Take the time to really get to know yourself, donít be afraid of making mistakes. They will make you stronger and wiser. Donít be afraid to admit you are wrong if you are, and donít be shy about standing up for yourself when you need to. Remember, you are going to be amazing. Whether you are a scientist or a singer, a technical wizard or a librarian, a teacher or a farmer, be you, be the best you can be and like what you do. Everyone has a skill, recognize yours and excel in it. This is your life now. Congratulations to all high school graduates everywhere. Go! Be amazed and be amazing.
