June is here. The beach is calling. It seems like everyone on Facebook is posting pictures of sand and incoming waves. It does make me want to go play in the ocean. Makes me a little homesick for San Diego. Even on the days that work claimed most of the hours in the daylight, there was always sunset to be seen over the Pacific Ocean. And if you watched patiently enough as the sun moved slowly down at the horizon, if you didn’t blink at the wrong time, if everything was just perfect, you would see – just as the very last morsel of the sun sank below the ocean – the “green flash.” That’s all it was/is a split second of the sun behind a sliver of the ocean water and it produces a flash of green light.
Meanwhile, back in Rector, I am beginning my 3rd week without air conditioning or the green flash. Hopefully the A/C part will be in today and this piece of my summer vacation will be over soon. Thankfully it hasn’t been too hot and we have had some rain so I haven’t felt too terribly abused.
Saturday was the annual Celebration of the Arts, presented by the Clay County Arts Council, Inc. Ms. Jessie Malin, from Rector and Ms. Sue Hoggard from Piggott were the honorees this year. Both of them very deserving as each of them has long been a supporter of the Arts and of the Clay County Arts Council. The CCAC presented each of them with a piece of art by our local artists. Jessie’s was a portrait of her dog, Addie, painted by Joel Boyd. Ms. Hoggard’s was a wall hanging by Jared Vaughn.
Entertainment was provided by Sophie Simmons who performed a modern dance number which showcased some fantastic moves. Sophie will compete in the Miss Arkansas Outstanding Teen Competition June 12-15. Good luck to you, Sophie.
Sherry Jennings and Chrissy Pazanowski sang several songs. As always, they were fantastic. The CCAC has a lot planned for the coming year and I urge you to support them in every way. They not only provide us with some quality local entertainment, they give scholarships to high school seniors each year and provide funds for art teachers that participate in the annual art show. They encourage artists in all art forms and provide venues for many of them to display their talents. Become a member, join the board, attend the functions. It is all fun.
New scam to mention. Several people have received phone calls from someone saying their Microsoft Windows has expired and want money of course. It isn’t real. Also the old reliable scam that says it is your email provider and your mail box is full, is going around again. They want you to click on a link and receive an upgrade. Also not true.
As you all know we are already into the election cycle for November. There seem to be a number of ways being tried to prevent people from voting. There has been some hacking of voter roles in many places. Don’t worry, our voting machines are not on line at all and the votes themselves cannot be hacked from outside. What can be hacked is the voter registration roles. By altering a zip code or a specific name, they can cause confusion that could prevent you from voting. One easy way to check on this is to check with your local county clerk to see if your registration is current or you can go to www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote . Enter your name, address and birthdate and click on the “Check your registration” button, and it will tell you immediately if your registration is valid or if it is not. I suggest we all do this. This link is good nationwide, so share it if you want.
I guess it is time for me to go. I hope you are enjoying these easy summer days. Let me know what is going on in your life and I will share it with everyone else. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org . Phone number (870) 595-4997. Check out your Rector, Arkansas website: www.rectorarkansas.com from time to time. I love to be told I need to update it and I take all suggestions to heart. Take a look.
Goodbye for now.
