Do you realize that this year is almost half gone already? Golly how the time flies when you’re having fun. Or even if you aren’t. I went to Kennett last week and I swear the corn was noticeably higher when I came back an hour later. I know the grass is growing like mad. Enough rain and enough sunshine is good for all that grows. This time of year we all like to see the crops looking good. They do look good, to my inexperience eye. Everything is looking good around here right now. Fresh and green, it is beautiful to see.
You know what else is beautiful these days. The ASU Chancellor’s/Dean’s list. Just look at all the smart Rector kids: Kylee Beshears, CL, Brittany Bradshaw, DL, Avery Bucy, CL, Madison Cate, CL, RaChelle Classen, DL, Grayson Crancer, DL, Matison Dean, CL, Amy DeMent, CL, Mallory Flemon, CL, Victoria Hill, CL, Brian Hufty, CL, Blake Larue, DL, Kirsten Richey, CL, Sarah Shaw, CL, Shelby Ward, CL. Congratulations all. Rector is proud of you.
It appears that I have acquired a cyber-stalker. Someone who reads this column and lurks amid my Facebook page, then leaves rants on Topix. As Topix isn’t a site I visit very often, the rants are usually lost on me, but occasionally someone will tell me they saw my name on a post there and sometimes I take a look and sometimes I don’t. I also have a champion that takes up for me, as that stalker does not agree with me very often. Actually never. I can’t figure out what he gets out of it all, as I don’t see it, but I guess I will give him a shout out from here and wish him well.
Next weekend will begin the 4th of July holiday. It’s a good time to reflect on how this great nation started out. Thirteen tiny colonies, populated by handfuls of people who had left the lands of their youth to settle on the other side of the world. It was a much bigger world then. Travel was hard, slow and dangerous, especially crossing the oceans. They did it though, and founded a nation to be different from all others of that time, a nation without a king or an emperor. They founded a nation that would serve its citizens, ostensibly equally.
We know, if we read our history books that it wasn’t an easy thing to build a nation like that. And we know that the growing pains have lasted a long, long time. “We the People” have changed and grown in numbers. We have cemented our ideals, have persevered. We did build a nation. We learned as we went and made mistakes along the way, but we didn’t give up. We got better. Our Constitution has stood the test of time. It has survived wars and economic depression. The United States of America got to be the Greatest Nation on Earth by recognizing the worth of “We the People.” Enjoy the long weekend and have a fun and safe 4th of July.
A reminder that you can easily check to see if your voter registration is current on this website: www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote . Enter your name, address and birthdate and click on the “Check your registration” button, and it will tell you immediately if your registration is valid or if it is not. I suggest we all do this. This link is good nationwide, so share it if you want.
