Yes, we had more rain, and even more rain. And more rain expected today. And the rain came with wind and lightning. Of course, now we need a rain hiatus until the cotton is in and picked. We also do NOT want it raining on Labor Day. Raining on our parade would really hurt our feelings. I know. I am a little picky, right? Mother Nature rarely takes my orders very seriously, however.
Let me say here that Labor Day in Rector is something special. We rock along for 361 days of the year with something just under 2,000 people. But the Friday before Labor Day a change begins. As if there was a siren’s call, people start coming from all over the country. Just about everyone who has lived here comes home. They bring the family and sometimes friends. People come to hear one band or another. Some people come for the Carnival rides or the food, but they come. By the time Monday has come and gone our population will have increased 10-fold.
There are class reunions, family reunions, Church reunions and even work reunions. Friday morning is the annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament at the Kennett Golf Course. This starts at 10:30 a.m. Friday night the Ultimate Oldies will entertain at 7:00. Tickets are $15.00 ($20.00) for reserved seating. You can get tickets at the Rector Water Office. Call 870 595-3035 for reservations and information. This is a great group of performers playing music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Fast paced, great sound, it is a performance you won’t want to miss.
Saturday morning begins with the Helping Hands 5k Run/Walk at 8:00 to benefit the RHS Helping Hands Organization. Following is the Hall of Fame Luncheon at noon. At 7:00 p.m. grab the kids and come to the Down Town Park on Main Street for an ice cream social and a movie in the park. This is the perfect place to relax and let the kids enjoy themselves. “Hook” is the movie and it will start at dark. Rector Downtown Central brings this to you to show off downtown.
Sunday morning is time for church. There are plenty of them here in Rector, so take your pick or pick your favorite. The pageants begin in the afternoon. The Petite Miss Rector, Pre-teen Miss Rector, Junior Miss Rector, and Ms Rector pageants will be held then.
Monday the parade starts at 9:00 and is followed with the rest of the days events at the Memorial Park on Highway 49. We have two great bands making their first appearances in Rector on Monday. The Winchesters of Chicago, featuring our own Will Mobley and JR Secret Service Man Tour will perform in the evening. There will also be political guest speakers, food, bingo, carnival rides and beauty pageants all afternoon and evening. See the Facebook page for times. The schedule is also on the Labor Day page of the www.Rectorarkansas.com website along with more information.
The “Rector Arkansas” and “Rector Labor Day Picnic” Facebook pages are the best place to keep abreast of the Labor Day Weekend Activities. Hae Sun Weber is keeping it current and questions are answered quickly. You will find some additional information on specific events on their respective Facebook pages. Schedules and contact information for each event is provided. Check it out and give a shout out to Hae Sun Weber for keeping it current. Come and celebrate with us.
I want to say a huge Thank You to the Neighbor 2 Neighbor crew who came and cleaned up around my house on Saturday. There were crews all over town getting it all spruced up for Labor Day. Good job to all. We do appreciate your hard work.
