We are ALL about Labor Day now. Four more days and the Ultimate Oldies are here. Then, the golf tournament is happening and the rest of the weekend is just more fun and games. So, get ready and come to Rector for Labor Day.
I am so excited about the new mural Joel Boyd is painting on the north wall of the Rector Downtown Drug Store. It is almost finished and it is so beautiful. If you haven’t seen it yet, make a point to drive by. But if Joel is working, don’t interrupt him. He’s on a mission. If you are coming from out of town be sure you look as you go by.
In spite of a lot of hard work by volunteers, the renovations at the new Museum building on Main Street are not quite complete, but it’s close. We will be open over the Labor Day weekend. Hours are Friday, August 31, 1:00 pm -5:00 pm. On Saturday it will be open from 1:00 until dusk, when you can catch the movie in the park. Sunday 1-5 and Monday, before and after the parade, 8:00 – 10:00 and 1:00pm – 5:00pm. Please drop by and take a look, just a preview of what it will be like in the near future. And thank you to all those who have been working so hard.
BBQ goes on sale at the picnic grounds at noon on Sunday. You can get a sandwich or buy it by the pound. Come on down and enjoy. I don’t think I have mentioned the Labor Day Dinner at the community center on Labor Day. It is always good and always a comfortable atmosphere so you can chill out while you enjoy a meal. If you want to donate food, there is a list at Harps and they will collect the donations and carry them to the community center for you.
You might want to get your tickets for the Ultimate Oldies show if you haven’t already done that. Tickets are $15.00 ($20.00) for reserved seating. You can get tickets at the Rector Water Office. Call 870 595-3035 for reservations and information. See you there.
Monday the parade starts at 9:00 and is followed with the rest of the days events at the Memorial Park on Highway 49. Carnival rides begin after the parade. Armbands will be on Sale Monday for rides between 4:00 and 10:00 pm.
We have two great bands making their first appearances in Rector on Monday. The Winchesters of Chicago, featuring our own Will Mobley and JR Secret Service Man Tour will perform in the evening. There will also be political guest speakers, food, bingo, and beauty pageants all afternoon and evening. See the Facebook page for times. The schedule is also on the Labor Day page of the www.Rectorarkansas.com website along with more information.
The “Rector Arkansas” and “Rector Labor Day Picnic” Facebook pages are the best place to keep abreast of the Labor Day Weekend Activities. Hae Sun Weber is keeping it current and questions are answered quickly. You will find some additional information on specific events on their respective Facebook pages. Schedules and contact information for each event is provided. Check it out and give a shout out to Hae Sun Weber for keeping it current. Come and celebrate with us.
Whew! There are activities for every day, so check the Facebook pages and come on up to Rector.
I must take a moment to recognize the passing of Senator John McCain. He has been an icon on our political scene for many decades and has exemplified the qualities we need in our legislative branch. His honor, integrity and just plain grit seemed limitless. His love for this country stirs the patriotism in each of us. I am old enough to remember the first picture I saw of him, prisoner of the Viet Cong, on his back with his arm in a cast, picture particularly meaningful to me at the time as my husband was deployed in Vietnam. He is a hero in everyway and he will be a hard act to follow.
I also want to mention the victims of the shooting in Jacksonville, Florida yesterday and their families. I am so sorry that all I can offer is my sympathy. These tragedies are far too prevalent. Prayers for all.
All this planning makes me tired. Got to go for this week. Let me know who is visiting who and what is going on in your life and I will share it with everyone else. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org . Phone number (870) 595-4997. Check out your Rector, Arkansas website: www.rectorarkansas.com from time to time. I love to be told I need to update it and I take all suggestions to heart. Take a look.
