Don Denny Named
Don Denny, Rector's smooth-working hook-shot artist, closed out his high school cage career in style last week when coaches and officials in the district basketball tournament named him to a position on the all-tournament team.
A Cat mainstay and one of the leading scorers all season, Don also teamed with Owen H. Clopton to take a majority of rebounds off the boards. On offense he worked the pivot slot and his hook shots and twist and turn flings at the basket were thorns in the sides of opponents all year.
Denny is a senior along with other starters Clopton, Landrum and Lovelady. The Blackcats won the county tourney this year by trimming Corning in the finals. They were edged by one point in the district by Marked Tree, after coming from behind and enjoying a 13-point lead at one time in the game.
Rector's independent team, the Cardinals, will benefit greatly from the graduation of these four stalwarts.
Many of our readers will remember Don Denny and Owen H. Clopton, both who lived for many years in Jonesboro after their college years. Mr. Denny worked in an official capacity for Arkansas State for a long time, and Dr. O.H. Clopton, Jr., served many of us as our doctor through the years.
Other senior members of this 1949-1950 Blackcat basketball team were Maxie Lovelady, Jerry Sinko and Gilbert Taylor. Junior class ball players were Wayne Landrem, Jerry Derden, George Barker and Doyne Parrish. I also recognized a sophmore, Rodney Hall.
By using the 1950 high school Cat's Paw annual, I was able to identify most of the senior boys Blackcat basketball team from their team picture. There was not a list of the players' names, but I was able to recognize all but two of the pictured players. Hopefully, our readers will remember the other players on that team, who I could not name. The Rector Library has Rector Blackcat annuals from the 1950's.
My father, Les McKeel, was the coach of this 1949-1950 team, and he was also the high school principal.
Any new information about this team would be appreciated.
