Annual show just a week away

Posted Friday, May 14, 2010, at 12:19 PM

Organizers of the 12th annual Piggott Heritage Park Car Show and Cruise report that more than 175 early entries have been received so far, as planning has been completed for the upcoming show.

The car show, which is sponsored by the Piggott Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 21, 22 and 23, at Heritage Park.

"We're on pace to have a good show," 2010 car show chairman Tim Blair noted. "The pre-entries have come in at a steady pace, and we're looking pretty good at this point. We expect a lot of last minute entries, and should easily match the numbers from last year's event."

Last year the event was moved to the Clay County Fairgrounds due to wet conditions at the park, but this year the show returns to its original location. "We'll be back at the park this year, and are looking forward to it," Blair added. "The Parks and Recreation Department has made some great improvements since the 2009 show, including the addition of new permanent restrooms at the park --- we're looking forward to showing off the changes to the car show participants, especially those that have been coming for several years."

Car show participants will be able to check-in beginning Monday at the Chamber of Commerce office in the depot building. Check-in and registration also will be going on beginning at 9 a.m. Friday at the park. Once again this year there will be a $500 cash prize for Best of Show, and $250 cash prizes for People's Choice and Ladies' Choice.

The activities for the registered car show participants will begin Friday afternoon with an "Early Bird" chicken wing dinner at the park. The meal is co-sponsored by Kennett National Bank and the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Piggott, with the members of the church taking care of the cooking and serving.

For the public, the car show gets underway at 9:00 Saturday morning with the opening ceremonies. Activities will take place at the park throughout the day, with attractions for all ages.

That afternoon the cars will line-up for the annual cruise to the Piggott square, an event that has become more popular over the years.

Throughout the evening many of the cars will be parked "under the lights" around the courtsquare. There also will be live music featuring "Kenny and the Flashbacks" and the annual car blow-up. Organizers said there will be concessions available, adding that many of the downtown merchants will remain open extended hours for the occasion.

"We've tried to make it easy on families to be a part of this year's show," Blair added. "Admission is $3 for everyone over the age of 16, while all the young kids get in free --- we hope this will make it easier for families to come out and be a part of the show."

A number of other activities are also planned in conjunction with the annual show. The Piggott Lions Club will hold a pancake breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. at the community center. The cost for the meal is $5 and a shuttle bus will be running from the park to the community center that morning. The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center also will be holding their annual quilt show that day.

The car show will wrap-up Sunday morning with the annual awards ceremony at 9 a.m. at the park.
