John Asbury Underwood (1835-1883) was born in Haywood County, N.C., one of 14 children born to Jesse and Mary Ledbetter who moved from North Caroline to Roane County, Tenn. And then settled in Alto Pass, Union County, Ill. and spent the rest of their lives there. John was one of five children who came to Clay County and settled west of Piggott. He went back to Illinois on a last visit to relatives and died there on Aug. 17, 1883, and it buried at Alto Pass, Ill.
John A. Underwood signed up for the Civil War in Illinois and received a gunshot wound in the right hip March 5, 1864 and signed up for an invalid pension April 12, 1874. He claimed that at times part of his body became paralyzed and he was rendered unfit to perform any of his labors. It had become worse in the last two years. He died of consumption and kidney infection, age 48.
John A. Underwood was first married to Martha Smith (1836-1867) in Union County, Ill. and they had two children: Rev. William Riley Underwood and Mary Jane Underwood (1862-1930). Martha is buried in Illinois.
John A. Underwood’s second marriage was to Elizabeth Belew (1851-1900) and she is buried in the Underwood Cemetery, west of Piggott. Their children were: Walter C., Annie Elizabeth, Harvey Alonzo, Daniele M., Charles Albert, Robert Monroe, and Eddie Underwood. Elizabeth received his pension after his death.
Rev. William Riley (1859-1949), son of John A. and Martha, was born at Alto Pass, Ill. and is buried in Piggott. He married Martha Elizabeth Hampton, daughter of Thomas H. and Alminte Thompson Hampton, and they had ten children: (1) Albert Weldon, (2) Laura who married George Parker and Henry Cagle, (3) Luther who married Luls Keys and had Grady, Louis, Lillian, Rachel, and Cornetta, (4) Lester married Etta Pitcock and had Marticia Minyard, Christine Williams, Wilma Haskins, Carolyn, Bill, Vernon, and Robert. (5) James Underwood married Ethel Cox and had James Ethridge who married Imogene Pillow, Leon married Kathleen Magee, Hershel married Mary (Polly) Traughber, Gerald married Janet Still, Janlea married Eugene Mann, Mary Francis married Ernest Schnaak, Jimmy Gene died young, Betty Kathryn married Billy Cash, Larry married Eleanor Birkhead, and Charles married Joyce Harmon, (6) Louie Underwood married Lillie Sigford and Ethel Emma and died in Wilmington, Calif. (7) Lennie Underwood married Clarence Bell and had William Edgar Bell, Reuben Bell, Ernest Wayne Bell, Marietta Bell Myers, and Martha Jane Blayock and a step-daughter Helen Scott. Lennie’s second marriage was to Charles Stokes in 1985. (8) Virgil Wesley Underwood married Edna Dees and Bertha Campbell and he died in Long Beach, Calif. (9) Lela Underwood marred Jim Crow and Bob Ewing, (10) John Davis Underwood married Mary Marietta McLeskey ( -1940) and had Peggy who married Jack Ballard, Beverly married Bill Irby, Jr., John D. Underwood, Jr., and Gary Underwood. John’s second marriage was to Eleanor Lacy in 1942 and she reared the children. Eleanor had a child, Gloria Jean, who died at birth.
Walter C. Underwood (1968-1921), son of John A. and Elizabeth, was married and had five children: Mary Annabell Minton, Francis Marion, Lenora Alma Spain, Arthur Calvin, and Minnie Effie Walker.
Annie Elizabeth Underwood (1969-1950), daughter of John and Elizabeth, married W. R. Cantwell in 1893 in Clay County and he died in May, 1917 in Scott County, Ark. Their children were Ida Pearl, Robert C., Oscar L. Elgie G., John R., and Ola G. Annie’s second marriage was to a Sims. She died in Johnson County, Ill.
Harvey Alonzo Underwood (1871-1945), son of John A. and Elizabeth, married Laura Adeline Lewis in 1902 in Clay County and had thirteen children: (1) Clarence Orley Underwood married Edith Clark and had Elaine Daffron and Clifford Underwood. (2) Mabel Underwood (1905-1906), (3) Louis Alonzo (Lonnie) Underwood (1907-1908), (4) Edna Underwood married Floyd Harbor and had Max, Roberta, and Eddie. (5) Alma Underwood married Roderick Shannon and had Emroy and Robert. (6) Grace Underwood married Ray Ford, (7) Sidney Fred Underwood died at age seven. (8) Amos Harvey Underwood married Wanda Inez Richards and had Sue Holbrook, Richard, Cliff, Robert, and Charles. (9) Norman D. Underwood married Martha Virginia Dearing and had Norma Virginia Jordon. (10) Earl Eugene married Almarieta Mann and had Martha and Mary. (11) Macel Underwood married Isaac Moore and had Douglas and Roy Delaine. (12) Roger Delaine Underwood (1925-1943), age 17, drowned on a swimming party in Huron River, Ann Arbor, Mich. (13) Douglas Marion Underwood married Mary Beth and had Brad and David.
Daniel M. Underwood (1873-1950), son of John A. and Elizabeth, lived in Harlingen, Tex.
Charles Albeert Underwood (1878-1953), son of John A. and Elizabeth, married Clara Cassandra Pool and had these children: Bess (1901-1903), Ruby (1903-1904), Twins Veda and Vera, Wheeda died at 14 months of scarlet fever, Thelma married Wes Johnson of Piggott, Twins Charles Marion, and Madge who died at 17 months at Black Rock, Imogene drowned as a teenager, and C. J. Underwood. Charles Albert moved around a lot with his job in construction. They and several of the children are buried in the Underwood Cemetery. Clara was living with her daughter Thelma when she died. The children were all listed in Clara’s journal published Dec. 3, 10, and 17, 2014.
Robert Monroe Underwood (1875-1876), son of John A. and Elizabeth, died at about age one.
Eddie Underwood (1881-1883), son of John A. and Elizabeth, died young.
