Martha Jane Underwood (1840-1928), was born in Roane Co., Tenn., to Jesse and Mary Ledbetter Underwood. Jesse’s family moved to Union Co., Illinois when Martha was four, and she was reared in Union County. Five of Jesse’s children moved to Clay County after they were grown and Martha was one of the five. Martha was eleven when her father died.
Martha was first married to John Goodwin on 17 Nov. 1863 in Union County and he died in the Civil War. Her second marriage was to Henry W. Harris, and they had two children, William Emerson Harris who came to Arkansas at age 18 and Laura Harris, his sister, who must have come with him. Laura died at age 17 and is buried in the Underwood Cemetery. Henry W. Harris (1840-1866) died in a hospital in Illinois from a sickness contracted in the Civil War. Martha’s third marriage was to Charles Poindexter in Union Co., in March, 1870, and four children were born: Mary Anice (Maye), Cora Alice, Nancy (Nanny), and Thomas A. Poindexter. Charles died before 1833. Martha’s fourth marriage was to Thomas Shirley in 1883 in Union Co., and he deserted the family to go to the Oregon territory. Martha’s fourth marriage was to Sam Gore, and he died.
Martha’s son, William Emerson Harris had settled near Greenway, married, and had several small children. When his wife died in 1899, Martha moved to Arkansas to help him. She suffered a stroke in 1903 and was paralyzed on the left side and walked with a cane. She was an invalid for 24 years and lived with her son. She was a member of the Greenway Baptist Church at the time of her death and is buried in the Underwood Cemetery.
William Emerson Harris (1867-1955) was born in Union Co., Ill. and died in Greenway, Ark. And is buried in the Underwood Cemetery, west of Piggott. He came to Arkansas at the age of 18 and married Ada Belle Brandon (1870-1899), daughter of John Calvin Brandon, in Sept., 1887. Their children were (1) Albert Newton Harris (1889-1973) who married Minnie Overton and had Mary Ada Harris Howell, Barbara Louise Smith, and Mae Sue Hensler. (2) Kittie Belle Harris (1890-1965) married Egbert Grant Ward in 1913 and had Ray Harris Ward, Maurice Stanley Ward, Wayne Eugene Ward, and Alma Mae Ward Lokey. (3) Cora Jane Harris (1892-1923) married Alvin Reagan in 1919, and they lived in Dunklin Co., Mo. She is buried in the Underwood Cemetery. (4) Osceola Harris (1893-1894) died young. (5) John William Harris (1895-1979) married Emma Elizabeth Potter, daughter of Robert Lee and Emma Floyd Edwards Potter, in 1926. They had Robert Emerson Harris and Martha Elizabeth Harris Garrard. (6) Maude Leah Harris (1896-1988) married Glenn Ross Norred and had one son, Kenneth, who married Wanda Wiley. (7) Nevada Mae Harris (1898-1983) married Sid Campbell and had George and Delaine. (8) An infant daughter was born and lived a short time in August, 1899 and was buried with the mother in the Underwood Cemetery.
William Emerson Underwood’s second marriage was to Ora E. Brashears (1875-1969), daughter of Dr. P. W. E. and Susan Morrow Brashears, on Sept. 1, 1903. They had an infant born on Oct., 1905 and died Nov. 1905, and James T. (1914-Dec. 1920) who was on the 1920 census.
Mary Anice Poindexter (1871- ), daughter of Martha Jane Underwood and Charles Poindexter, married John Brothers and lived in Union Co., Ill. Her children were Don, Leo, Della, Myrtle, Mabel, Raymond, Vesta, Aris, Esther, Thelma, and Daisy.
Cora Alice Poindexter (1875-1952), daughter of Martha Jane Underwood and Charles Poindexter, married John T. Smith in Union Co., Ill. and they moved to Clay County in 1901 and they are buried in Mars Hill Cemetery. Their children were Elbert and Ethel who died young, Clifford Herbert of Piggott married Arvie Hutchinson and had eight children; and then married Millie Warren in 1940, Ruby Francis married Orlie O. Lawrence of Rector and had Geraldine BElote and Charlene Kegley, Nolen of Kennett, Ona Williams of Rector, Louse of Calif., and Chester E. Smith of Rector married Veda Bell Crockett.
Nancy (Nanny) Poindexter (1872-1903), daughter of Martha Jane Underwood and Charles Poindexter, married Marion Stone and had Flora, Albert, Elmer, and Cora Stone. She also had a son, Robert Shirley by Thomas Shirley.
Thomas A. Poindexter (1877-1878), son of Martha Jane and Charles, died before his second birthday.
