Abraham B. Winchester (1842-1907) was born in Tennessee, married in Greene Co., Ark. (now Clay) to Francis Jane Cruise (1846-1932) on July 4, 1865 (marriage date on pension papers), and had their first of nine children all born in Clay Co., in 1867. Abraham and Francis are buried in Blooming Grove Cemetery. His widow applied for his Confederate Pension (File 27784) on his record Aug. 15, 1927 at Rector, Route 2 where she was living with her son, James B. Winchester.
Abraham and Francis had these children: Ann Eliza, James Benjamin, Bethany, Clara, Arthur, Albert Bernice, Ira A., Mary Alice, and Cora Bell Winchester. We will take each child and tell their history.
Ann Eliza (Annie – Annalizer) Winchester (1867-1924), daughter of A. B., was born at Chalk Bluff, Greene Co., Ark. She married Noah A. Deniston about 1888 in Clay County, and they had (1) Bertha Francis Deniston (1899-1929) who married Shalan Elmer Hamilton and had a son, Harley Hamilton. Bertha died in Hamilton Co., Ill. (2) Bonny C. Deniston (1895-1896) is buried in Blooming Grove Cemetery near Rector, Ark. (3) Delbet Deniston (1895-1900) was born and died in Clay County. (4) Weltha A. Deniston (1903- ) married Arthur Acree in 1919 in Dunklin Co., Mo., and had Hoyt Dudley and Reby Acree. On the 1900 Census Noah and Annis were in Liddell Township in Clay County. By 1910 and 1920 they were living in Cardwell, Dunklin Co., Mo.
James Benjamin Winchester (1869-1950), son of A. B., was a farmer and cotton buyer, a mason and member of Dannely Lodge No. 200, and a deacon in the First Baptist Church, Rector. He was married in Dec., 1893 in Clay County to Letitia (Titia) I. Simpson, and they had Ola Francis (1898-1935), Freeda Mae who married John Wallace Ahlf in 1912, and Lena who married H. G. Wolfe and lived in Kansas City.
Bethany Winchester (1872-1899), daughter of A. B., married William Alonzo Vowell in 1894 and they had a son, Gordie L. (1897- ). William Vowell’s second marriage was to Hester Williams in 1899, and they are on the 1900 Clay Co. Census.
Clara Winchester (1874- ), was the daughter of A. B., and no information has been found. She either died young or we need her marriage information to trace her.
Arthur Winchester (1875- ) was the son of A. B., and he must have died young as no information has been found after 1880.
Albert B. Winchester (1897-1946), son of A. B., was married July 18, 1900 to Ouida Crews. Albert’s second marriage was to Gladys Glenna Landrum, and they had Carl Albert Winchester (1926-1997) who married Peggy Smith and had Carol Winchester and Suzy Winchester Smith; and Bob Winchester (1929-1997) who married Martha Ann Lack and had Roger and Anne Winchester.
Ira Austin Winchester (1879-1960), son of A. B., was married to Josephine E. Taylor in 1901; to Mollie Hicks in 1910; and to Gladys McDonald in 1916. Children of these marriages were: Louis Taylor Guy, Francis Hill Copeland, Flora Cullins Eason, Carolyn Bennett, Corlis Ira Winchester, Hearold Austin Winchester, Donald E. Winchester, and Uvah Maples. Ira is buried in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector.
Mary Alice Winchester (1880-1940), daughter of A. B., married Walter W. Mebane and had one child, Carol Mebane. Walter and Mary Alice are buried at Mars Hill.
Cora Bell Winchester (1886-1966), daughter of A. B., died at her home after a long illness and is buried in Rector. She married John H. McCrady and had Thelma Crockett and Opal Wade.
