William Lafayette Yancey and his third wife, Virginia Perkins, and Stephen H.
William Lafayette Yancey (Sept. 1837-Sept. 1906), son of Robert and Parthena Yancey, was born in Fayette Co., Tenn. And died in Rector, Ark., age 67, and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery just west across the Clay County line in Greene County, Ark. The cemetery is located on a hill just past Pleasant Grove Methodist Church.
William and his brother grew up in Fayette Co., and both served in the Confederate Army. William L. enlisted in March, 1862 in Col. Jackson's Co. B, 7th Ten. Calvary Regiment, commanded by Gen. Forrest, and served until the final surrender. He was paroled at Gainesville, Ala., in 1865 and was a participant in the following battles: Jackson, Miss.; Holly Springs, Miss; Nashville and Franklin, Tenn.; and was in a number of minor engagements. After the war he returned to Tennessee, farmed in Fayette for two years, and then moved to Arkansas in the fall of 1866. He owned 240 acres all in one tract with 180 acres cleared and one-half bottom land.
William married (1) Susan B. Bradshire (1838-1875) on 22 September, 1859 in Tennessee and had five children: Sarah P., the wife of James Wooten; Willie and (1863-1865); Mary E., The wife of John Wamble; Robert J. married Ida; And James L. Yancey (1871-1900).
William L. Yancey married (2) Jane Wooten Who was reared in Greene Co., Ark. in Feb. 1876 and she died Aug. 30, 1877, leaving one son, Stephen H. Yancey who married Cora pace. Steven was born 3 Dec., 1876 and died Dec., 1960.
William L Yancey married (3) Mrs. Martha Virginia Pickens Owens on 31 Jan., 1878. Martha was born in Tennessee, the daughter of A. M. Pickens, a minister of the Presbyterian Church. She had a daughter, Mary Edgeworth Owens, Buy a previous marriage to James A. Owens, who died 25 Dec., 1876. Mary E. married Matthew Thomas and was a widow by 1910 with a daughter, Vera Ethel, 12. According to the 1900 census William and Martha had an adopted daughter, Lindsey (Linnie) Joe Pace, born June, 1882, age 17, who married William T. Davis 21 July, 1901.
Martha Yancey, widow of William L. Yancey, applied for a Civil War Pension under his file number 15658 and was approved in 1907.
The obituary of W. L. Yancey was published in The Vitascope at Rector and read: “W. L. Yancey, an old citizen, widely known and universally respected, died Wednesday morning at 2 o'clock at his home west of Rector, after a long illness of 41 days, age 69. The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. W. Cox, assisted by D. W. McGinnis and his body was laid to rest at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. The Masons and Odd Fellows held joint ceremonies at the grave. The funeral was attended by perhaps a thousand friends and admirers. He leaves a wife, for children, and numerous relatives. This good man rests from his labors and his works will follow on after him.”
Sarah P. (Sallie) Yancey (1860-1940), daughter of Wm. L. and Susan, was first married to Thomas Ahlf on March 22, 1877. Her second marriage was to James P. Wilton (1857-1909). Their children were: (1) William W. Wooten married Mary Alice Utley and they had an infant son, James Harry Wooten, an infant son, Marie Wooten, an infant son, and Ula Mae Wooten Richardson.(2) Robert Lynn Wooten married Mollie Shaw. (3) Stephen Alva Wooten married Ola McCoy Edmonston. (4) James Wooten married Lillie Hopper. (5) Mini Ethel Wooten married Floyd Crouch. (6) Willie Ann died as a child. (7-11) unknown. The 1910 Greene Co. census lists Sarah is having 11 children with five living at the time.
Stephen H. Yancey (1898-1972), son of Wm. L. and Jane, married Cora E. Pace in Nov., 1898 in Clay Co. and had (1) William B. Yancey who married Nellie Jackson and had two sons. (2). Amy Yancey married Marshall Cox and had a daughter, Louise Cox. (3) James Edgar Yancey married Edna McBride. (4) Jon Floyd Yancey married Mabie Stallings. (5) Gladys Yancey married Ray Boles. (6) Marie Yancey married Edgar Pruett. (7) Denver Yancey lived in Calif. (8) Doyle Yancey married and had three daughters. (9) Veneeda Yancey married Jesse Vanguilder.
Mary J. (Lizzie) Yancey (1867-1933), daughter of Wm. L. and Susan, married John (Johnnie) W. Wamble (1865-1937) And has Ilar May, Omar G. Who married Lula Elrond, Orlie who married Edith Morris, and Jewel who married George Thomas.
