Doctor (his first name) John Crews was one of three Crews men who were in Greene Co., Ark. (now Clay) by 1860. Another, George W. Crews, came by 1870, and they must have been kin. They all came from Halifax Co., Virginia, moved to Bedford Tenn. and on to Weakley Co., Tenn. before coming to Clay Co.
Doctor John Crews (D. J.) was born 29 Aug., 1810 in Virginia and died 6 Dec., 1876 in Clay County, and he and his second wife are buried in the old part of the Piggott Cemetery. He was first married to Mary Monroe on 7 Jan., 1834 in Halifax Co., Va. and their children were: (1) Malinda Crews who married F. Fowler in 1847 and became a widow with two children, Louise and Mary; (2) Sarah A. E. Crews; (3) Cornelious Crews; (4) Margaret F. Crews; (5) Mary A. Crews; and (6) John Williams Crews. D. J.’s second marriage was to Mary Tribble and their children were (7) Thomas J. (1847-1909) was born in Bedford Co., Tenn., belonged to the Greenway Lodge and is buried in Piggott. He married Mary J. Lively, daughter of William Lively, and had four children. His mother lived with him after his wife died in 1878; (8) Martha J. (1848-1921) married Edward Meekins Allen, Jr. and had Mary Belle, Alice M., Virginia Martha, Charlotte S., and Meekens M. Allen. (9) John A. Crews (1850-1895) married Sarah Ann Parsons and had Ora Crews who married Wm. D. Warren, John Thomas (Tommy) married Ida Mae Williams and had Clarence Earl, Lewis, Virgil Thomas, Esco, Pearl Madden, Lucille Pretts, and Era Jemper; Mary T. married W. L. Mowery; and Arthur B. Crews married Louise Morgan, daughter of Isaac and Margeret Morgan, in 1904 and had Thelma Evans Romine Johnson, Howard Crews, Agnes Atkison, and Alma Holifield, Arthur later married Lela Payne, daughter of Andrew J. and LEatha Vaughn, who had married Albert Morgan, Oscar Payne and Arthur Crews, and had these children: Vagel Tieche, Coy Morgan, Mrs. Bob Swartz, Gerald Morgan, A. J. Morgan, and L. Payne; (10) Charlotte Martha (Mattie) who married William Samuel Forrest; Virgie married H. C. Nettles; John Arthur Pollard died at age 15 months; Vhiere Pollard died at age 12 years.
George W. Crews (1810- ), son of William and Elizabeth, was in Greene Co., Ark. by 1870. HE was born in Halifax Co., Virginia; was on the 1850 Henderson Co., Tenn. census; and the 1860 Weakley Co., census. He was married to Tabitha Oldham Mar 24, 1828 in Halifax Co., Virginia. Their children were Elizabeth, Martha A., Sarah, Charlotta, William, John A. (Hoppin John), and Mary. The 1870 census included George and his wife Tabitha, his married daughter, Martha A. Tucker, a widow in 1870, and her four children, Geo. W., Jane, Nancy, and Luther.
John A. (Hoppin John) Crews (1838-1903), son of George W. and Tabitha, was born in Bedford Co., Tenn. and died at his home in Rector on July 9. HE was a member of the Blooming Grove Church. HE married Louisa O. Beckley in 1868 in Tennessee and their children were: Armanda P. (Mada) married Basley Freeman Gatewood and had Glennie, Esther, and Beatrice; Jena Crews married John B. Hickey; Elbert Royall, and James Ester Crews married Machin Rodery. James E. lived in Memphis 65 years and was a conductor for the Illinois Central Railroad.
Elbert Royall Crews (1876-1944), son of John A. and Louise, was born in Rector and married Alice Jocie Hooks, the daughter of John and Sarah Thames Hooks, and had the following children: Aubrey Crews, a barber, married Klugh Ethel Wagner and had Mary Francis who died at five months, Donald Ray Crews married Bonnie Evans, and Betty married Joel Kelsey and Boyce McLeskey; James Elbert married Aileen Bucy in 1922 and had Ruth Wimberley and James Robert; Aylon Crews; Cecil Loyd married Lucille Potter and had Betty Griffith; Gaylon Crews; Leotin Elvin Crews; Era Crews married George Kemper; and Veda Crews. Elbert later married Carrie Mae Mitchell Parker and had Darin, Royall and Mrs. Lestra Picker. Elbert died in Jackson, Florida.
