(A stone in Mary’s Chapel Cemetery simple reads: “S. E. Mays, Co. C, 10 Tenn Cav.” This story almost went in the unsolved file. What do you do without dates, census, a family, full names, marriages, land records, etc. Ancestry did not help at first because my guessed-at dates were off. I finally read all the available obituaries and found one of Charles O. Mays that named S. E. and Ann as his parents and gave some dates.)
Stewart E. Mays (1819-1896) was born in Tennessee; had children named on the 1870 Williamson Co., Tenn. census by a first unknown wife and was with his second wife; and was on the Wayne Co., Tenn. census in 1880; and came with his son, Charles O. Mays, to Clay Co., Ark. in 1896 as stated in Charles’s obituary.
Stewart served in the Union Army in Williamson Co., Tenn. 24 Jan., 1866. The children’s names have been taken from the census: Robert A. 1851, Joseph F. 1853, William D. 1855, Rueben 1857; Pheasant N. 1859, Stewart 1861, John 1869, and Charles Obediah Mays 1872. Rueben was born in Tenn and lived out his life there. Charles was the only one who came to Clay County.
Charles Obediah Mays, Sr. (1872-1936) died at the age of 63 of heart trouble and is buried in the Woodland Heights Cemetery at Rector. He married Elizabeth Alice Foster (1875-1956), daughter of D. A. and Elizabeth Foster and they had (1) Steward E. J. Mays (June 1895-Oct. 1895) who is buried at Mary’s Chapel Cemetery. (2) William McKinley (Sept. 1896-Dec. 1896) is buried at Mary’s Chapel Cemetery. (3) Charles O. Mays, Jr. (4) Gladys Lulu Mays. (5) Laura Inez Mays. (6) Alfonzo (Fonzy) Mays. (7) and Reva Iris Mays.
Charlie Obediah Mays, Jr. (1897-1947), son of Charles O. Mays, Sr., married Ora Minnie Moore in 1915 and had two children: Aveline Elizabeth whomarried Doyle Dortch and a Cann, and Mildred Elaine Mays who married a Trudeau.
Gladys LuluMays (1900-1972), daughter of Charles O. Mays, Sr., married James Otis Wagster in 1919 and had Donald Warren Wagster who married Ola Jewell Gardner, and Joy Vernell Wagster who married Harrison Branch in 1947. Gladys and James are buried in Rector.
Laura Inez Mays (1903-1971), daughter of Charles O. Mays, SR., married William H. (Willie) Foster. On the 1940 Greene Co. Census they had a nine-year-old son, William. They are buried in Rector.
Alfonzo A. Mays (1910-1987), son of Charlie O. Mays, Sr., married Evelyn Earlene Rust in Maricopa, Ariz. in Jan. 1936. They are buried in Rector.
(There have been Mays families in Clay County since 1860 but they do not seem to be connected to this family.)
