Owen T. Toombs (1811-1898), son of William and Sally Hemlett Toombs, was born in Halifax Co., Va. and died near Pollard, Ark. and is buried in the Toombs Cemetery. He gave the land for the Toombs Cemetery probably from his Homestead land of 160 acres that he received Feb. 1, 1893 from the Little Rock Land Office (Doc. 15491-Part #1: NW, Sec. 27, Twp. 21 N, R 7E). The cemetery later became known as the Toombs/Battles Cemetery. There are 47 graves and only ten with markers. Names have been added by family members and others who knew of people being buried there.
Owen Toombs later moved from Virginia to Gibson County, Tenn., and he was married in Gibson Co. to Lucinda Glascock (1813-Feb. 1880), daughter of Peter Glascock, Jr. and Mary Polly Jones Glascock, and their children were born in Gibson County. The family was in Clay Co., Ark. in time to be counted on the 1880 Census and Lucinda is on the Mortality Schedule for that year. She is buried in the Toombs Cemetery.
Their nine children were: William Alonzo Griffith, Owen Pete Thomas, S. M., Emma Theresa, Gabriel, Mellard Melchesedic, Henry Clay, Milford Philmore (Fillmore), and Charles Wesley and they will be discussed in order of birth.
William Alonzo Griffith Toombs (1837-Oct. 1896) married Sarah Martha Ward, daughter of James and Francis Weathering Ward and had these children: (1) James (Jimmy) Owen Toombs (1857-1857); (2) William Alexander (1860-1938) married Lucinda M. Wallace and had Dewey Day Toombs and Beulah L. Toombs who m arried Homer Lawrence Pollard and had seven children; William Alexander married Emma Lee Landrum in May, 1900 and had Helen (Effie), Ballard B. Lillian Matilda, and Lola. HE died in Texarkana, Bowie Co., Texas; (3) Sara Ida Toombs (1864-1912) died in Paragould; (4) Wilton Clay Toombs (1866-1912); (5) Robert E. Toombs (1869-before 1920) married Elizabeth Norah Hedspeth and had an 80-acre Homestead from the Little Rock Land Office in 1891. They had Nora B. who married VictorCalvin Wright and had Tennie Johnson, Mayme Nichols, and Myrl Hood; Willia “Lee” Ida Toombs married John Wesley Kirk and had Amuel Mason, Dempsey Joel, Otho Dorsey, and an infant, John, Jr.; Homer Toombs (1894-1926); Orlie Osman (R.) Toombs married Velma Gertie Busby and had Lillian Moneda Toombs Wilson; Lena (“Linnie”) M. Toombs (1899- ); Herbert F. Toombs (1904- ); Otis O. Toombs (1906- ); and Earl E. Toombs (1908-1976). (6) George Albert “Bert” Toombs, (1871-1958) married Dora Shelby in 1897 and had seven children with two preceding them. Surviving children were Lena Settlemoir, Nettie Clayton, Delbert Jasper, Alonzo A., Louie Edward, and Anna May, (7) Jones Columbus C. Toombs (1875-1918); (8) Wilburn W. Toombs (1879-1879).
Owen Pete Thomas Toombs (1839-1896) is buried in an unmarked grave in Toombs Cemetery. He married Martha (Mattie) Mann and had William M. (Bill) Toombs who married Kitty Belle Baker Dunlap who already had these Dunlap children: Delmer, Ella, Thelma Mae, and Hoyett.
S. M. Toombs (1840- ) was on the Gibson Co., Tenn. for 1860 and not found after that.
Emma Theresa Toombs (1849- ) married Benjamin W. (Been) Battles (1837- ) and they had Henry B. Will, Tom, Owen, and Sally Battles Staggs. Emma and Ben are in unmarked graves in the Toombs Cemetery.
Gabriel M. Toombs (842-1915) married Margeret Ella Letitia Smith in Gibson, Co., Tenn. and had Gertrude A, Martha Orvilla, Owen Roy, Hylee Sallie, Martha Lucy, and Onia Sophronia. Gabriel and his wife are buried in Muskegee County, Okla.
Melchesedic “Mel” S. Toombs (1845-between 1910/1920) was born in Tenn. and is buried in an unmarked grave in Toombs Cemetery. He lived with his parents until their deaths, and is shown with his brother, Henry Clay Toombs, on the 1900 and 1910 Census.
Henry Clay Toombs (1849-1933) married Eliza Ann Flowers (1852-1870) and had (1) Lulu Toombs and (2) Leora who died young. Lula Toombs married Jasper Newton Holifield and had Sara Ellen who married Wm. Henry Crockett; Mary Jane married Logan Pinkston and Lonnie Forrest; Flora married W. S. Boswell and had Jewell Bomar; William Henry “Doc” married Vivian Ruth Cook; Alfred died young; Louis Edward; Thomas J. Chester married Vernia Cole; and another child.
Henry Clay Toombs’ second marriage was to Elizabeth T. (Bettie) Hall in Sept. 1874 in Tennessee, and they had (3) William Owen Toombs (1875-1944) married Dianna Hester Melton and had Minnie who married Willard Mounce and Lewis B. Renard; Dora Elizabeth married Gus Grider; Willis H. was a retired schoolteacher; James Moses married Rachel Warren Latta; and Lewis A. married Virgie Nell Keas. (4) James A. Toombs (1876-1877). (5) Mary (Mollie) E. Toombs (1878-1956) married James E. Lang and had Stella May and Herbert. (6) Lessie E. Toombs (1883-1956) married Robert Holmes (Jess) Cosby and had Laura Edith, Ollie Madalen, Lloyd, Floyd, Ferris, Ira E., and Goldia married Jesse J. Nicholas. (7) Johnnie A. (1881-1888)/ (8) Louis Angus Clovis Author married Stella Mae Pollard Conley; Otis Odell; Joseph Henry married Floice Blankinship; Imogene; and Hannah E. Toombs. (9) Oscar Clay Toombs (1890- ) married Bertie Lois Hoggard. (10) Tennie N. Toombs (1892-1925) married Grover Cleveland Baker, Sr. and had Howard, Alma Conley, Dallas, Frances Kelly, Taylor, Tennie Pruett, and an infant that died t birth. Grover later married Lula Watson and had other children. (11) Lucy N. Toombs (1895-1977) married Luther (Luke) S. Conley and had Lorene (1914-1914), Lawanda Dunlap, and Wilbur Conley. Henry Clay Toombs’ third marriage was to Fannie B. Bridges (1857-1932) in May, 1909.
Mellard Philmore (Fillmore) Toombs (1851-1920) married Ella Scarbrough and they had Zonie M.; Owen Easel Benjamin married Lula Pullum and Dollie L. Nettles; Benjamin; and Irene Toombs Lewis. On the 1900 Clay Census, Phil is divorced.
