Hilliard Judson Sides (1821-1902), son of William Harrison Sides, was born in Saint Clair Co., Ala. and died in Clay County, Ark. at the age of 80. HE and his wife, Sarah Ann Campbell Sides (1828-1901), daughter of Hugh and Mary Sipes Campbell, are buried in Mounds Cemetery, three miles west of Rector, Ark. They were married Nov. 1, 1849 in Gibson Co., Tenn. and moved by 1850 to Giles Co., Tenn. where most of their children were born. They moved to Greene Co., Ark. (now Clay) about 1868 with their children; Thomas Henry, John Guston, James C., William Richard, Sarah Elizabeth, Calvin Lafayette, Andrew Jackson, Wiley P., and Hilliard Judson, Jr. Mary Francis was born in 1869 after they reached Greene Co., Ark.
Hilliard J. Sides mustered out of the Mexican War July 16, 1847 and later received a pension. He was a private in Co. B, 1 Regt. Tenn. Calvary. He was listed as an invalid on the 1900 Clay Census.
Thomas Henry Sides (1850-1930), son of J. J. and Sarah Sides, was born in Giles Co., Tenn. and is buried in Mounds Cemetery. The lad for the cemetery was set aside frm his 40 acre homestead. He married Margaret Virginia Young (1854-1914) in Feb., 1872, and they had fourteen children, with ten living to maturity. They were Church of Christ members, and Thomas was mayor of Rector one term and a merchant in Rector. The family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas at some point and then returned to Rector, and several of the children were born in Texas. Margaret died in Wichita Falls and was brought back to be buried in Mounds Cemetery in a spot she had picked out previously. Four of the children of H. J. and Sarah (Thomas Henry, John Guston, James C., and William Richard) are also buried in Mounds. Margaret’s funeral was in Monea College Auditorium in Rector. Their children were: (1) Mary Bell Sides married James L. Dunn and had William, Sidney, Alma V. Eldridge, Mae O. Lawrence, Nellie Matthews, Virginia Clark, Minnie Voelker, and Hazel; (2) Willie Ann Sides married James L. Duffle; (3) James H. Sides was born in Rector in 1878 and was operating a steam engine on trains between Wichita Falls and Dallas, Texas when he retired in 1944. (4) William Albert Sides married Minnie Agnes May and died in Texas. (5) Arthur C. Sides (1882- ). (6) Minnie Scott. (7) Lillie M. Sides Bazzell Smith Rust; (8) Lena Sides married A. M. Alexander and is buried in Rector. (9) Myrtle Woody. (10) Lenora E. Sides died young. (11) Vera M. Sides. (12) Roy Byron Sides was born in 1896 and never married. Thomas Henry’s second marriage was to Mrs. Mary Purdom Tongate in Aug., 1914.
John Guston Sides (1852-1929), son of H. J. and Sarah, was born in Giles Co., Tenn. and died at his home in Rector, Ark. and was buried in Mary’s Chapel Cemetery. He was a farmer, a Methodist, and a Mason. HE was married to Jane Sexton in 1874 in Rector and they had one child, (1) Rosetta “Rose” Sides, and Jane died in 1876. Rose married Rubin J. King in 1895 and had H. Arl King who married Mabel Martin; Charlie King; Wilson King; and Laura King. Rose’s second marriage was to James Daniel Emerson in 1912, and they had Doyen and Elbert Emerson.
John Guston’s second marriage was to Sarah Elizabeth Sikes Massey, daughter of Arthur Sampson and Rebecca Collins Sikes. John and Sarah had (2) Jane Ether M. Sides who married Isaac “Ike” McCluney in 1901 and had Cecil Jane Williams Laughton, Garlan Glenn, Flora May Patrick, Elvia McDonald, Zenith Shannon, and Carrie Edith Bain. Jane later married W. O. Bain who had children by a first marriage. Mr. Bain led singings for revivals. (3) Henry Clay Sides died in Paragould and is buried in the Rector Cemetery; (4) Nancy Ellen Sides; (5) Medish Iola Sides. (6) Rutha L. Sides died young. (7) Sarah Elizabeth died young. (8) Prion Judson Sides died at age 16. (9) Hilliard Isaac Sides married Senia M. Stanberry and acted as Santa Claus in Piggott and Rector for many years and is buried in Rector. Sarah had these children by her first marriage to C. C. Massey: (1) Susan e. Massey; (2) Mary Fanney Massey who married Frederick (Fred) A. Foster and had an infant that died before 1900, Henry C. Foster, Mary P. Foster, and Sarah E. Foster; and (3) Columbus P. Massey. John Guston was sometimes called “Uncle Fish,” and he used a cane. The White Walnut School 1 1/2 miles northeast of Rector was located on his farm.
James C. Sides (1853-1897), son of H. J. and Sarah, died at age 44. No information.
William Richard (Uncle Billy) Sides (1857-1945), son of H. J. and Sarah, was born in Giles Co., Tenn. and died in Rector of a heart attack. In 1878-79 he hauled freight to Dexter, Mo. and brought back merchandise to the Scatterville Store. He retired from farming in 1917. In 1880 William married Mary Ball and they had (1) John Albert Sides who married Annie B. Erwin and had William P., Dorothy Maylath, Charles Wayland, Madeline Cloud, Harold, William Erwin, John Sides, and Ann Haberman. He lived in Mayfield, Ky. For 10 years. He is buried in Rector. (2) Nancy Ethel “Nannie” (1883-1904), age 21. (3) William Granville Sides (1886-1904), age 18/19. (4) Ruth I. Sides married Verner Smith of Pemiscott Co., Mo. and is buried in Rector. (5) Pearl Sides married M. G. Baker in 1916 and is buried in Rector. (6) Joseph E. Sides moved to Norman, Okla. (7) Denver M. Sides married Leah Carter in 1923 and lived in Granite City, Ill. and was in Jacksonville when he died.
Sarah Elizabeth (Betty) Sides (1859-1917), daughter of H. J. and Sarah, married William Joplin German about 1878 and had (1) Leroy (1880-1880); (2) Wesley C. who married Maude L. Roberts and had Wayne, Marcelle Bearden, and Doris Bryant Rice; (3) Wade Roy Hilliard married Gertie May Troxel and had 13 children (Jack Benton, Jewell Lee Morris, Wanda Clay, Faye, Erma, eulah, Bernice Justice, Mary Louise Zimmerman, Hazel Williams, Vada Hardin, Gerald L., Thelma R., and Doyle D. The family moved to Calif.); (4) Hattie German (1887-1916) married William McClain. (5) William J. (Bill) married Hallie McClerklin and had Alva J., Barbara Hale (Paul), Golden Christian (Alonzo), and Betty Roen; (6) and John Rudy German.
Calvin Lafayette (Bunk) Sides (1860-1929), son of H. J. and Sarah, and a merchant in Rector, was born in Giles Co., Tenn. and died of pneumonia at his home in Leonard, Ark. In 1880 he was working as a farm laborer for Wm. H. and Mary Jane Hartline Martin and met and married their daughter, Eliza Jane Martin in 1881. They had these children: (1) Linnie Sides married Thomas Andrew anes of Rector and had Mrs. Leslie Barber of Shreveport, Mrs. Ruth Dennison of Rector, and Thomas A. Janes, Jr. of Piggott, owner of Janes Dept. Store for a number of years. (2) Lee Sides (1888-1909) married L. Cooper. (3) Ira Sides married Vennie Lee Trantham and had Melda and Muriel. (4) Claiburn Sides (1893-1895), Liberty Hill Cemetery. (5) Mammie Sides married Robert Earle French and had Mildred Moore. (6) Annie Sides married Earnest B. French and had Desimond Boyd French and Clayborn (Hoot) French. (7) Earle Sides (1906-1933) married Iva Mae McCluney and went to Texas and is buried in Rector.
Andrew Jackson Sides (1862-1925), son of H. J. and Sarah, married Lillie May and is buried at Rector. Their children were Charlie, Lula M., Morris was in the Navy for 23 years and died in a car accident in Calif. in 1932 and is buried in Rector, Roy Clifton, Leslie and William Raymond. Andrew was a merchant in Rector.
Wiley P. Sides (1964- ), son of H. J. and Sarah, died young.
Hilliard Judson, Jr. (1866-1932), son of H. J. and Sarah, died at age 66 in Abilene, Texas. He married Agnes Hardy in Jan., 1898 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Mary Francis Sides (1869-1960), daughter of H. J. and Sarah, was first married to Stephen Jefferson Jones (1861-1912) and had two children, Ollie REnard and William Ozie Jones. Her second marriage was to Marcus Lafayette McCrady (1858-1932) in Oct., 1913, and he had children by a first marriage.
