George Washington Sanders (1862-1951), son of James Lafayette and Mary Caroline Pounds Sanders, was born in Gibson, Co., Tenn. and was in Clay County, Ark. by 1900. He settled near Greenway and was a farmer and a dealer in livestock. He died in the community Methodist Hospital in Paragould and is buried in the Mitchell Cemetery near Greenway.
His first wife was Elizabeth Sophronia Butler (1858-1892) whom he married in Gibson, Co., Tenn. Nov. 26, 1882. They had (1) Martha Manerva “Mattie” Sanders, George Goodwin, Lewis Castle, Fred H., Ila D. Baker, Mary Virginia Kime, Freda Marlar, Mildred Darnell, a daughter died early, Jaunita Elizabeth, and an infant son. Mattie and William are buried in Mitchell Cemetery. (2) William Marshall Sanders (1886-1983) married Nellie Russell in Oct., 1917 and they had nine children: Alene Cato, Lena Mae Jackson, Leona, Albrt Newton, John, Gertrude Wikowsky, William Monroe, Billy, and Marvin Roscoe Sanders (1931-1936). William and Nellie are buried in Mitchell Cemetery. (3) Mary Lee Sanders (1888-1888). (4) Lonnie Sanders (1890-1890). (5) Infant Sanders (1891-1891).
George W. Sanders’s second wife was Emalee Davis Vaughn (1871-1896), and they were married in Gibson co., Tenn. in 1892. Emalee’s children were: (6) Thomas Ira Sanders (1892-1963) who married Lillie Lynn in April, 1913 in Greenway, Ark. On the 1920 Clay Census Thomas was a Blacksmith. Their children were Virgie B. married Guy Winn, James Newton, Eugene married Helen Watson, and Marion R. Sanders. (7) Olly V. Almus Sanders (1894-1895) died young. (8) Infant Sanders (1896-1896) died young. Emalee was born and died in Gibson County, Tenn. Thomas and Lillie are buried in Mitchell Cemetery.
George W. Sanders married his third wife, Centha Banana Williams (1878-1930), daughter of Perry Williams, in Gibson Co., Tenn., Jan. 5, 1898, and they made the trip to Clay County. They are buried in Mitchell Cemetery. Their children: (9) Lillie Mae Sanders (1899-1900) died young and is buried in Mitchell Cemetery. (10) Judge Royal Sanders (1901-1988) married Mary Leona Garrard in 1922 and had three children: Thomas Daryl preceded the mother, Melvin R. Sanders, and Noel M. Sanders lived in Oklahoma. Judge, a barber, opened Sanders Grocery Store in Piggott in the 1920’s and hired Mr. and Mrs. Norris Pierce to operate it for him, and the Pierce’s later opened their own store. Judge died in Sherridan, Grant Co., Ark. His wife is buried in Piggott. (11) Vida Sanders (1902-1909), Mitchell Cemetery. (12) Robert E. Lee Sanders (1903-1995) married Ella Davis in 1905 and lived in Flint. (13) KAttie Garnett Sanders (1905-1995) married Claude Higdon and lived in Flint. (14) Ella Sanders (1906-1907) died young and is buried at Mitchell. (15) Flora Louise Sanders (1909-2001) married Arvil Lester Wood and lived in Flint. (16) Mirla Sanders (1909-2000) married Leslie Crowson and had Cynthia Etta Jean. They are buried at Mitchell. (17) Clyde Sanders (1913-1977) lived at LeRoy, Ill. (18) Beulah Sanders (1913-1977) married Everett M. Crowson and had Merrida Johnson, George Douglas Crowson, and Virginia. (19) Dona Wanda Lee Sanders (1914-2007) married Orbra R. Wood and had Clyde Ray, Jerry Dean, and a third child. She died in Johnson Co., Ind. and is buried there. (20) Mary Etta Sanders (1917-2005) married Delmar (Duke) Lee Hardin and they are buried at Mitchell.
George W. Sanders had two step-daughters; Delia Brandon of Greenway and Cordelia Vaughn (1885- ) who was on the 1900 Clay Census.
