Biron Starling Vaughn (1814-1878) was born in Henry Co., N. C. and died in Piggott, Clay Co., Ark., and is buried in the Piggott Cemetery. He was in Clay County with his third wife and family by 1870 and settled at Chalk Bluff. He had three wives and seventeen children. Later he moved west of Piggott, and the County Home was later built on his home place.
Starling was first married to Elizabeth Cates (1814-1848), daughter of Thomas and Ester Hattie Hastings Cates, who was born in North Carolina and died in Henry Co., Tenn. Their children were (1) James Thomas Vaughn (1834-1920) who married Isabelle Caroline, and she filed for his Civil War Pension in 1914. James was born in Henry Co., Tenn. and died in Weakley Co., Tenn. (2) Martin Van Buren (1840-1920) was also born in Henry Co., Tenn. and died in Kerr Co., Texas. He was captured in the Tenn. Confederate Army while in the 52nd Inf. Regt. He married Margaret Ellen Coche and had 16 children who lived in Texas. (3) Jerleen Vaughn (1841-1929) married Benjamin F. Mayo (1843-1879), son of James William and Sarah Mayo, and they are buried in Piggott. Their children were (a) Mary Cornelia married William Shelby Crittenden and had Luther A. who married Mary Eaton and Lorene Johnson and had Mrs. J. E. (Pete) Vaughn, Carl Lester, John Virgil, and two died young; John Franklin married Garbella Crisp and Elnora Neeley; William Joseph married Nora Myers; Della Pearl married Ellis Dempsey; and Pinkney E. died early; (b) Terrisy Ann Mayo married William H. Edwards; (c) William S. Mayo married Missie E.; (d) Lucian Garland married Geneva Frew and they had one child; (e) Lucy Ann Mayo and (f) Mattie Lou Mayo died young and was buried in Piggott. (4) Cornelia Ann Vaughn (1844- ). (5) William Vaughn (1847- ). (6) R. H. Vaughn (1846-1925) married Mahala and died in Kerr Co., Texas.
Starling’s second marriage was to Mary Ann Cannon (1834-1854) in Henry Co., Tenn. in Aug., 1851. Their children; (7) Mary J. Vaughn (1855-1940) was born in Weakley Co., Tenn. and remained single. (8) Emily Jane Vaughn married Ezekiel Davis, a Civil War solider, in 1869 and moved from Greenway to Piggott to a farm near the County Home. They had five children; James A., Minnie Bell Smith, Mary Ann Rogers Thrasher, Sterling M. Davis, and an infant.
Starling’s third marriage was to Hiley Ann McAllister (1831-1911) in 1856 in Weakley Co., Tenn. Hiley came in 1870 to Greene Co., Ark. with Sterling, Emily Jane, William, Teletha, Isabelle, Starling, Mary H., Elifus E. and George W. Vaughn. Starling and Hiley had these children: (9) Tabitha Elizabeth married William M. Brogden in 1883, and they are buried in Piggott. (10) Isabelle Clark Vaughn married James Monroe Edwards, a Civil War Veteran with the Ark. Fifth Regt., and they had George W., Carl, Minnie B. married Dock Allen and James Wright, Ida married George Crouch, Willie C. married Maude Fly, Bettie Ann married James A. Ward, an infant, John L., Cecil Joseph, and Charles. (11) Susan L. Vaughn died age 10. (12) Starling Marion Vaughn married Mary Alice Underwood Gibbs, daughter of Jesse and Josephine Harmon Underwood, and she had a son, Clyde Gibbs, by John Gibbs in 1898. Starling and Mary Alice had Clara Elizabeth who married John Gettings, a Civil War Veteran and had 14 children (Melvin, William, Norene Howard, Christine Clifford, Lorene Raines, Alice Island, Maggie Jones, Charles, June Neeley, Kathryn Young, J. D. Gettings, Lavell, and two died young.) Other children were James Arllie Vaughn who married Sallie Bea Groves in 1926; Jesse Earl Vaughn married Leona Irene Cittenden; Baby Vaughn; and Floyd Author Vaughn who married Thelma Simpson and Esther Berger. (13) Mary Henryetta Vaughn married John W. Williams in 1899, and they had John F. Williams, Claud Elison, Dave, and Edna married Clint Davis. (14) Eiphaz Allison Vaughn married Martha Ann Smithee and died in Riverside Co., Calif. in 1947. (15) Charnel George Vaughn died at age two in Weakley Co., Tenn. (16) Margaret Ann Vaugn married James M. Helton and died in 1918.
Child 17: Andrew Jackson Vaughn (1890-1942) married LEatha Brogdon in 1895 and had (1) Carrie Vagle Vaughn married Charles Albert Sherriden in 1912 and had Charles Albert, and Alma Mae Blake. Carrie’s second marriage was to James Francis Holifield, and they had Melvan, Ardell (Art), and Betty Jean. Homer had two children by a previous marriage, Homer and Loyd Holifield. (2) Lela Mae Vaughn married Albert Morgan and had Coy Edward, Gerald Glenn, Albert Jackson, Vagle Lorene Trecks, Francis M. Swartz, and Letha Josephine. Lela’s second marriage was to Oscar Payne and had Oscar Lewis Payne; and her third marriage was to Arthur Crews. Her step-children were Thelma Johnson, Alma Holifield, Agnes Atkison, Howard Crews, and Veda Payne. (3) William Starling Vaughn married Hazel Marie Stallings and had Maurice and Lulu Belle Vaughn who married C. C. Edwards. His second marriage was to Opal Newman in St. Louis. (4) Eliphaz (Ezra) Vaughn married Edine Morgan and had Mary Louise, Georgette, Joyce Pauline, and Kenneth James and lived in Decator, Ill. (5) Mary Belle Vaughn married Rossie Johnson and had Darrel Loton, Donald Ray, and Bobby Jean. (6) Ethel Vaughn married Albertus English and lived in Alexander, Indiana. (7) Ardell (Boots) Vaughn married Alice Elizabeth Gipson and had eight children and lived in Anderson, Ind. (8) Arvis Jackson (Shorty) Vaughn married Maerene Delia Renard and lived in Indiana. Delsie Marie Vaughn married Loyd Carl Hargett and had Deloris M., Kermit Dwight, and LEatha Kay. Andrew and Leatha helped rear four grandchildren; Lula Bell Vaughn Edwards, Maurice Vaughn, Charlies Sherradin, and Alma Mae Blake. In Dec., 1904 Andrew J. Vaughn received a 40-acre Homestead from the Little Rock Land Office (Part 1: SWSW, Sec. 4, Twp. 20 N, R 8 E).
