John O. Neeley (1819-1894) was born in Bedford Co., Tenn., the son of Thomas J. and Sarah (Sallie) Oakley Neeley and the grandson of John D. and Mary Carrington Neeley. He entered the Little Rock asylum, age 75, on June 13, 1894 and died in August, 1894. He is buried in Blooming Grove Cemetery. He had nine children by his first wife, Susannah (Lizzie) Bills (1820-1885); William Riley, Thomas G. Mary Louise, Andrew Jackson, Martin Wallace, Sarah Ethaney, James Perry, Martha Ellen, and John Riley Neeley.
John O. and Susannah were married March 17, 1841 in Marshall Co., Tenn. and the first four children were born there. In 1853 they were in Marshall Co., Miss. and Martin Wallace was born there. In 1853 they were in Johnson Co., Texas for the birth of Sarah. The 1860 census has them in Red River, Texas. The birth of James Perry was in Dallas, Texas. Martha Ellen and John Riley were born in Tate Co., Miss. By 1870 they were in Lauderdale Co., Tenn., and the 1880 census had them in Clay Co., Ark.
William Riley Neeley (1842-1861), son of John O. and Susannah, was born in Marshall Co., Tenn. and died at Russellville, Ky. from measles while serving as a private in Co. A., 23 Regt. Miss Vol. in the Civil War. His father and brother, Thomas G., were also in the war.
Thomas G. Neeley (1844-1916), son of John O. and Susannah, was born in Marshall Co., Tenn. and died in Clay County and is buried in Johnson’s Chapel Cemetery east of Boydsville. He married Penny A. Sorrell in Feb. 1866 in Dyer Co., Tenn. and had these children: Indiana, George Marion, Elnora N. married James Andrew Benson, Imenta, and Matilda (Tildy) S. who married Frank Easley in 1903. Thomas G.’s second marriage was to Dicy (unknown) who later married a Carmon. Dicy and Thomas had Homer Lonzo who married Sarah Fitzgerald and Nellie Davis and had nine children; John Grover married Melvina Lulu Harris and had eight children; and Iva E. Neeley married Joseph L. Cooper and Richard Owen. Thomas G.’s third marriage was to Mrs. Rebecca Huggins of Dunklin Co., Mo. in 1911. Thomas G. Neeley served in the Civil War with the Miss. Volunteer Regiment Infantry. He applied for a pension (No. 15619) which was granted Aug. 14, 1901 in Arkansas. His doctors were Dr. Sam W. Houston and Dr. E. M. McAulty.
Mary Louise Neeley (1846-1924), daughter of John O. and Susannah, was born in Davidson Co., Tenn. and died in Holcomb, Mo. She is buried in Blooming Grove Cemetery, and George is buried in Hillsboro Cemetery on the Hill Road to Rector. Her first marriage was to Albert B. Sorrell in April, 1866 in Dyer Co., Tenn. Her second marriage was to George A. Harbor, a Civil War soldier, was also in Dyer Co. George had been married to Eliza Dean in 1851 and had Rebecca Elizabeth, Nancy J., Martha H., James Thomas, Joseph, Susan Ellen, Emily C., Sarah C., and Mittie Lou Harbor. Mary Louise and George had Henry B., Lillie Corintha, and Margaret I. Harbor.
Andrew Jackson Neeley (1848-1889), son of John O. and Susannah, married Susan Uriah Bearden in Jan, 1875? in Clay County and had William Kindrick, Onie Owens, Leona E., and John Neeley.
Martin Wallace Neeley (1850-1926), son of John O. and Susannah, is buried in Williams Cemetery, 3 miles west of Piggott. HE married Penelope (Penny) Elizabeth Hooks about 1872 and had eight children: (1) Edd Neeley married Sarah Hester Seals in 1895 and had Beulah NEeley who married John Nicholas Thompson in 1915; e y(2)(Neeley married Murla Mae Langley; Lela Roxy Neeley married a Morgan; Julia Mae married David C. Frew; Hattie married George Washington Owen; Ollie; Emma Bell Polhamus; Elmer Earl; Timothy M.; Maloy Tenny; Hester Sulvonda Dover; and Alma who married Ted Johnson. (2) Eudora (Dora) Neeley married (a) Jacob J. Wegel, (b) John Franklin Crittenden, and (c) Samuel Jordon Edwards. The Wegel children were Julius Earl, Wiley M., Barbra, George K., and Jacob Dewey Wegel. The Crittenden children were Emmett Edward and Virgil F. (3) Ephrum Neeley married Mary O. Edwards, daughter of William and Teresa Mayo Edwards. (4) Austin Neeley died at age five. (5) Lonnie L. Neeley married Janie Johnson and Cora Ellen Maples Dozier, and he and Cora were divorced in 1925. Children were Irene Neeley who died age ten and is buried in Williams Cemetery, Pauline Neeley, and Leonard (Lon) Jr., who was killed accidently while hunting in 1935. (6) Annie Lee Neeley married Everette E. Hughes in 1903 and had six children. At her death she left three children: Martin Hughes, Ona Wegel, and Lona Davis. (7) Lou Ella Neeley married John Calvin Lewis in 1903 and had Lennie who married Louis J. Langley; Ollie married John Willard Files; Loreen married Kenneth H. Wiggs; John Chalin Lewis married Constance Norred; and one child preceeded them. (8) Laura M. Neeley married James Fred Davis, son of Henry Abner and Emma Bogas Davis, in 1906 and died in 1908 after a child was born and died. James Fred Davis married Vivian Inez Wheeler in 1911 and had five children.
Sarah Ethaney (“Thanie” on her stone) Neeley (1853-1940), daughter of John O. and Susannah, married John Alfred Hooks and had Alice Jocie who married Elbert Royal Crews in 1894; Adella Pearl married Thomas A. Reeves in 1893; Lula Mae married Glennie E. Gatewood in 1911; Icy Lena married Henry Lee Nancy in 1907; Charles Bevel; Zora Edna married Carl C. Parrish and Doyne Parrish; Arthur Neeley (a twin) married Willie Wilson in 1898; Ollie NEeley (a twin) married Lula Mae Beckley.
James Perry Neeley (1857-1947), son of John O. and Susannah, was born in Texas and died in Malden, Mo. He married Eliza Jane Copeland and had Harvey who married Jessie James, Johnave, Andrew, Pearl Hogg, Ada Nettles, and Minnie Mabrey.
Martha Ellen Neeley (1861-1890), daughter of John O. and Susannah, married Harvey A. Seal and had Emma Coredlia who married James R. Gregory; Robert Jefferson married Sarah Adami and had Ray Lloyd, Burton, Aaron, Floyd, Charles Winford, and Euvilla Seals; Martha Ellen died at 29 and is buried in Piggott. Harvey married Florence Bradford, daughter of R. N. Bradford, and had Dollia Ella, Viola Agnes; Oscar Herbert married Essie V. Wheeler; Ninnie Hester married Alfred H. Edwards; Etta; Eva Audrey married Ezra Mayo and had Lester, Pansy, and Bill Mayo. Ezra later married Zelma Grider Duckworth who had three Duckwroth children, Hillard, Josie, and Carl. Florence also had Mattie Opal Stoutsenberg; Ollive Lillie died young; Edith Bearice married a Box, and Orvis Peay died in Texas.
John Riley Neeley (1865-1940), son of John O. and Susannah, married Susan Hoggard in 1933 and had Cora Hardy, Lura Strawn, Bertha Freeman, Herman Curtis married Dessie Hoots and had Gillis Ray who worked 40 years for Morris Farm Center at St. Francis and married Patsy Lou Province and ha dShawn, Andy, Heather, and Hunter Neeley, Jimmy C., Patsy Sue Gaylin, and Melva Marlene Pinkston, Earnest, and two children preceded the parents.
John O. Neeley’s second marriage in 1885, age 76, was to Jerlean Vaughn Mayo, 61. She was the widow of Benjamin F. Mayo. Jerlean received a pension of John’s Civil War record with the 57 Regt. Miss. Inf., 1862-65. He had also seen service in the Mexican War and applied for a pension in 1875.
