The Rector City Council continued its discussion on how best to approach the implementation of a new vicious dog ordinance during Monday night's monthly meeting. A warm front moved through early last week, bringing powerful 60 to 70 mile-per-hour winds which ripped through town Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 29, blowing out windows, stripping shingles from rooftops and sending sometimes-dangerous debris flying through the air...
City Council approves budgets, hears from cable official

Aldermen approved the city's annual budgets and heard a lengthy update from a spokesman for NewWave Communication at the regular meeting of the Piggott City Council last Tuesday evening. Sheriff's Dept. investigates inmate smuggling operation

The Clay County Sheriff's Department has made seven arrests in an apparent plot to smuggle banned and illegal substances to inmates incarcerated at the county jail in Piggott. On Monday, Jan. 28, the department found a bag of marijuana, two cigarette lighters and an ink pen in the possession of inmate Fidencio Cantu of Piggott. Through investigation, the department determined the items were brought into the jail by a 309 prisoner...

1968 The Piggott City Council met 40 years ago this past week, and approved a measure to start a local municipal court. Alderman also voted to allow Fire Chief Marvin Taylor to purchase a new fire truck. Piggott Tractor and Equipment hosted a dinner meeting at the PHS cafeteria recently, with those in attendance viewing a film called "John Deere Farming Frontiers 1968"...

A late Cougar surge just wasn't enough Monday night, as Rector fell at Manila, 77-74. Trailing 60-48 going into the final frame, the Cougars scored 26 in the fourth to claw their way back into the game. The teams were nip and tuck in the early going, with Manila holding a small advantage, 17-15, after the first quarter. Rector trailed 43-31 at the half...

The Lady Cougars picked up their 17th win in a row Monday night, as they imposed their will upon county rival the Lady Mohawks, whipping them in Piggott, 76-46. Rector benefited from some strong senior star power, as Hannah Parsley and Amber Haynes torched the Lady Mohawks for 33 and 23 points, respectively. Parsley set a Lady Cougar record, burying eight three-pointers in the lopsided win. Haynes added three treys, as the duo combined for 11 of Rectors 13 from the land o' plenty...
Junior boys wrap-up regular season, lose to Manila at district

The Piggott junior Mohawks closed out their regular season with a 47-45 overtime win at Harrisburg last Tuesday. Spencer Coomer and Tanner Murray had 14 points each in the win, including several big free-throws by Coomer in the overtime period. The Tribe also got contributions from the other starters, including Jonathan Perkins, who hit a 75-foot buzzer beater to end the first half. ...

The Piggott Mohawks appear to be peaking at just the right time, as they bounced-back from a recent loss to Brookland by winning three in a row. Saturday night the Tribe completed the trifecta with a three-point win at Corning, ruining the Bobcats senior night for the second year in a row. The wins also moved the Mohawks into fifth place in conference going into next week's district tournament, and improved their chances of advancing to regional play...
