The entire region remained under an excessive heat warning through 9 a.m. Wednesday, and will continue under an excessive heat watch through Thursday evening. The National Weather Service indicated that heat index readings would climb to around 115 Wednesday, and in areas near bodies of water such as the Mississippi River, may reach 120. Project underway at BRAD HeadStart

Work is now underway on the expansion of the Piggott BRAD HeadStart Center on South Taylor Street. Funding to expand the facility was approved last year and the improvements will include the addition of a nursery to allow for the care of infants and toddlers. The original plans called for the expansion to be on the north side of the building, but due to conflicts the new addition is being built on the south side of the existing structure. It's been a busy summer for PHS tennis coach Paul Seegraves, as he held his annual summer league for boys and girls at the municipal tennis courts. It's hot enough to fry an egg on a sidewalk. For sure, it's hot out there. Several summers ago, at high noon, I did try frying an egg outside. I found a piece of discarded metal, laid it on a concrete walkway, and proceeded to fry an egg. I cracked the egg and it slid out onto the metal "skillet."...

1970 Local residents watched in horror the afternoon of Thursday, July 30 as a C-130 transport plane exploded in mid-air and crashed to the ground about a half mile west of Piggott. All six crewmen aboard the plane, which was on a training mission out of Little Rock Air Force Base, were killed leaving a grisly scene on the ground as hundreds rushed to the location. The crash site was just north of what is now West Clay Street, at the bottom of the hill southeast of Kilbreath's riding arena...
