Winton named president of state title association
A Piggott businessman has been named as president of the Arkansas Land Title Association.
Van Winton, president of Clay County Abstract, was named to the post during the association's June conference in Little Rock.
Winton is also a member of the legislative committee for the Arkansas Title Insurance Licensing Board.
"Title insurance covers you for any losses you may or may not have," he said.
Currently, anyone is able to write title insurance policies, and Winton is working with the land title association on legislation that would establish minimum operating guidelines in Arkansas.
Winton said there is also no formal continuing education in title insurance in the state. He said the association wants to organize a one-week school, conducted throughout the year, that would utilize qualified instructors.
"We have a huge education committee that is working on this," he said, noting it will be similar to the program offered by the Texas Land Title Association.
"We haven't found a location for it yet," Winton said. "It's all in the planning stages right now."
He said the Arkansas association also hosts two educational seminars annually. In addition, it has a new web site under construction, which can be accessed at www.arlta.net
Winton said Clay County Abstract has been a member of the association for several years. The business is one of the oldest in the state and has been in operation since 1886.
