He was born Feb. 28, 1931, in Clay County, the son of the late Norris and Arietta Crawford Cate.
He was united in marriage to Zilla Mae Goodman on June 24, 1950, in Piggott.
Mr. Cate spent most of his life in the Piggott community. He worked as an electrician and a Missionary Baptist minister. He was an Army veteran. Many children in the town of Piggott referred to him as grandfather.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and one son, Mark Cate who preceded him in death on Dec. 13, 1991.
He is survived by his wife, Zilla Mae Cate of the home; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Nathan and Edna Cate of Winchester, Va., Norris and Debbie Cate of Scott, Ark., Royce Cate of Piggott, Boyce and Emma Cate of Paragould and Douglas Cate of Bradenton, Fla.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Rex Smart of Piggott, Yvonne and Ronnie Settlemoir of Piggott and Rhonda and Pete Nikalisen of St. Louis; two brothers, Granville Cate and Carl Cate of Walnut Ridge; one sister, Joyce Brawner of Piggott; 20 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Irby Funeral Home Chapel in Piggott with Bro. Carl Cate officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Nathan Cate, Norris Cate, Royce Cate, Boyce Cate, Douglas Cate and Brian Settlemoir. Honorary pallbearers were Nathan Cate, II, Jordan Nikalisen, Brandon Smart, Lowin Cate, Dillan Cate, Steve Dover and Johnny Howell.
Irby Funeral Service of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.
