Norman D. Underwood

Norman D. Underwood, 85, of Flint, Mich., died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Maple Woods Manor in Clio, Mich.

He was born in Piggott on May 12, 1918, to the late Harvey and Laura (Lewis) Underwood. He was one of 13 children.

Mr. Underwood was united in marriage to Martha Virginia Dearing on Sept. 27, 1939, in Piggott. She preceded him in death on Oct. 21, 1992, in Jonesboro. To this union one daughter was born.

He was a standout athlete at Piggott High School. Mr. Underwood served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was a Corpsman aboard the U.S.S. Lubbock, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. The family moved to Flint, Mich., in the 1950s where he later retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1971.

Mr. Underwood was a skilled amateur photographer and craftsman of stained glass. His stained glass creations adorn Central Baptist Church on Center Road in Flint, where he was a leading member for many years. Mr. Underwood was a Lifetime Member of the Burton V.F.W. Post 2777.

He was preceded in death by 11 siblings.

He is survived by his daughter, Norma Virginia Jordan and husband, Homer, of Flint, Mich.; two grandchildren, Roger Jordan and wife, Cathy Akers-Jordan, of Davison, Mich., and Lisa Jo Hunt and husband, Jim, of Dearborn, Mich.; two great-grandchildren, Jimmy and Jordan Hunt of Dearborn, Mich.; and one sister, Macel Moore of Piggott.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at Irby Funeral Home in Piggott.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
