Riverside Rebels defeat Piggott, 51-28
The Junior Rebels of Riverside are ranked number one in the conference. The Junior Rebels showed the Piggott Junior Mohawks why they have that ranking when they played at Piggott on Tuesday, Dec. 14. Riverside defeated Piggott, 51-28.
"The Junior Rebels have a kid who is 6-8 and he is hard for us to handle," coach Matt Sutfin said.
Despite the low score, 10 Junior Mohawks hit the basket for points. Leading the Mohawks was Chuck Rice with seven points. Casey Booth had six points. Brice Swann had four points and led the Mohawks in rebounds with four. Jerry Sweaney added three points. Wesley Wood, Manny Luna and Blake Burkman each had two points, while Justin Howell and Tyler Grubb contributed one each. Daniel Baldwin led the Mohawks with two assists for the game.
"Regardless of the amount of points we have, we didn't shoot well tonight," Sutfin added. The Junior Mohawks followed up the loss to the Junior Rebels of Riverside with an overwhelming 50-30 win over the Junior Yellowjackets when the Mohawks traveled to Bay on Friday, Dec. 17. "We had a slow start in the first half, but had a really good second half," Sutfin said of the game.
Chuck Rice played a strong game as he led in scoring with 14 points and had four assists. Daniel Baldwin followed Rice with nine points. Casey Booth had six points for the evening. Ethan Midkiff had six points and led with 10 rebounds. Justin Howell hit for four points, while Wesley Wood hit for three. Brice Swann, Chris Weatherspoon, Jerry Sweaney and Sam Yates each had two points for the game.
"We don't have five regular starters on the junior high team, we have 10 or 12 starters," Sutfin said of his team. "We play a lot of eighth graders and usually every one gets a chance to play," Sutfin added. "This team is doing fine," Sutfin concluded.
The win over the Yellowjackets brings the Mohawks' record up to 6-4. The team will be in action again when school resumes in January.
