She was born on August 10, 1911, in Springerton, Ill., the daughter of the late Edmond and Clara Pifer Johnson.
She was united in marriage to Arthur Underwood on Jan. 18, 1928. They had five daughters.
Mrs. Underwood was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Underwood; one grandson, Kevin Pobst; two great-grandchildren, Dustin McIntosh and Ethan Doyle; one sister, Nelda Settlemoir; two brothers, Merrel Johnson and Maurice Johnson; and two sons-in-laws, Wendell Lee Potts and Charles Gordon.
She is survived by five daughters, Bernice Gordon of Stevensville, Mich., Ella Jean Lemons and husband, Louis, of Okay, Okla., Patsy Pobst and husand, Ray, of Piggott, Geraldine Potts of Dallas and Sonya Cole of Piggott; 12 grandchildren, Bernita Foster, Louie Lemons, Charley Lemons, Phyllis Looney, Sondra Gatewood, Teresa Dunlap, Angie McIntosh, Shawn Potts, Shane Potts, Tonya Doyle, Lewis Cole and Lance Cole; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leland Johnson of Mt. Vernon, Mo., and Vernon Johnson of Searcy; a sister-in-law, Florine Johnson of Florissant, Mo.; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2005, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Bro. Kim Bridges officiating. Burial followed in the Underwood Cemetery near Piggott. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Lt. Col. Louis Lemons, Charles Arthur Lemons, Lewis Gaylon Cole, Lance Cole, Shawn Potts and Shane Potts.
Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.
