Wednesday, April 27, 2005

The Piggott Lady Mohawks scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead and earn a victory over the Lady Mustangs from Buffalo Island Central in the semifinals of the 3AA-North District Tournament at Rector.

The game had been tied at 1-1 before Laura Hickson hustled down the first base line, reaching on a dropped fly ball. Chelsea Graves sent a shot through the gap between second and short, scoring Hickson and starting the Piggott hot streak. Natalie Brown reached on an error, scoring Graves. Brown then promptly stole second and third base. Melanie Dunlap followed with a walk. She then stole second. Then, it was Michelle Wallace's turn to get walked, loading the bases. Natalie Branscum brought Brown home, reaching on an error. Kristin Hicks hit a single over the second baseman's head, scoring Dunlap. When the dust had cleared, Piggott held a 6-1 advantage.

BIC was set down in order in the top of the seventh, ending the game.

Graves earned the win for Piggott, working all seven innings. She gave up one run on four hits while ringing up six batters and walking one.

"It started out real slow, but we finally had the bats come alive for us," Lady Mohawks assistant coach Jeff Priest said. "I felt we played well defensively all game. Even though we weren't hitting the ball, we kept it close, so that when we started hitting, we gave ourselves a chance to win."

Graves helped her cause, going 2-2 at the plate with two RBIs. Branscum finished 2-4 with two RBIs. Also hitting safely were Laura Jardeen 2-3, Brown 1-3 with an RBI and Hicks 1-4 with an RBI.

The Lady Mohawks advanced to play Rector in the finals on Tuesday.
