Wednesday, December 7, 2005

The Piggott Lady Mohawks were downed 53-38 in conference action at Rector this past Monday. Despite an early lead, Piggott trailed at each break in the action: 15-9, 32-16 and 40-31.

The Lady Mohawks were hot out of the gates, building a 9-0 advantage in the first three minutes of play. Unfortunately, that hot streak faded, as Rector went on a 24-0 run which lasted until well into the second quarter.

The Lady Mohawks scored eight of the final nine points in the third period to cut the deficit to single digits, but could get no closer to the lead than seven points.

"They just played a lot harder than we did," Lady Mohawks head coach Jeff Priest said. "We jumped out 9-0 and had a chance to put them away right from the beginning, but we let them back in it. When that happened, they got a lot of confidence. It was an uphill battle from there."

Rector had a 28-19 advantage at the line, but only connected on 16 attempts. Piggott sank 13 at the charity stripe.

Ashley Coleman and Kortney Toombs each paced the Lady Mohawks with 12 points. Other scorers were Lauren Hickson 8, Jordan Coomer 3 and Erica Rickman 3.

Jordan Cornelison led Rector with 14 points.

With the loss, Piggott drops to 5-4 pverall and 0-3 in conference play.

The Lady Mohawks will host Riverside this Thursday.

The Junior Lady Mohawks were 42-26 winners in their matchup with Rector. Piggott never trailed, leading after each period: 12-6, 20-14 and 34-20.

A 14-6 run in the third quarter pushed a small lead into a double-digit advantage for the junior girls.

Hillary French and Penny McCluskey each finished with 12 points to lead the young Lady Mohawks to victory. Other scorers were Michelle Greaney 8, Kaitlin Morgan 3, Kenna Dennis 3, Sarah Cooper 2 and Alicia Allman 2.

Hillary Calhoun scored 10 to lead Rector.
