She was born May 18, 1913, in Crockett, the daughter of the late William Harrison and Sarah Ellen Holifield Crockett.
She was united in marriage to Lester T. Gurley on March 5, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1956. She was also preceded in death by one step daughter, Wanda Hanna and four brothers; Denver, John, Cecil and Taylor, one sister; Ester.
Her true passion was cooking; she was employed with the Piggott School District as lead cook at Southeast Central and later at Piggott Elementary School. She retired from the cafeteria at Brown Shoe Co. and also cooked at the United Methodist Church on Wednesday nights. She loved gardening and canning. Since her retirement she continued to work as a caregiver in her community. She delighted in the compliments that she received from her family and friends that she served.
She is survived by one daughter, Martha Jane Coomer Knight of North Little Rock; one step daughter, Marietta Glenn and husband Vernon, of Hot Springs; seven grandchildren, Janssen D. Coomer and wife Tammy, Shannon K. Coomer and wife Lynn, Tabatha Dunlap, Jimmy Hanna and wife Merita, Derek Hanna and wife Bambi, Suzetta Glenn and Stephen Glenn and wife Debbie; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Eva Dell Burns and Veda Smith of Piggott; one niece, Sue Holcomb; two nephews, Ronnie and Davy Crockett; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Celebration of her life was held April 13, in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel with Carl Haley, Jr. officiating and burial in Piggott Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dewey Holcomb, Alvin Butler, Jimmy Hanna, Davy Crockett, Steve Champ and Alec Coomer. Honorary Pallbearers were Janssen Coomer, Shannon Coomer and Gary Holcomb. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
