Last week's game at Chester A. Barner Gym in Marmaduke marked a homecoming for Lady Mohawk head coach Josh Robins, as he returned to his alma mater. The game was a good one, too, with the Lady Hounds pulling out a last second win 55-53.
The game was a close affair throughout, and came down to the final minute with the two teams tied at 53-53. With just 18-seconds left in regulation Marmaduke's Chelsea Drope hit a jumpshot to give the Lady Hounds the lead, and the win.
"We were shooting the ball well, the girls looked sharp," Robins noted of the effort against the Lady Greyhounds.
Michelle Greaney led the Lady Mohawks on the night with 13, followed by Kenna Dennis with 10. Drope led all scorers with 18 on the night.
The junior high contest also went to the Lady Greyhounds, as they posted a 45-14 win. Breanna Yates and Mallory Wright had three each for the Piggott junior girls in the loss. Mercedez Jones led the Marmaduke effort with 20.
Piggott vs EPC
Monday night the Lady Warriors of EPC visited the new Piggott gym for the first time, and junior standout Jordan Madden left her mark. Madden set a new personnel scoring record on the night as she dropped 42 points on the Lady Mohawks, as the Warriors cruised to a 63-45 win. Jordan Engle led the Piggott attack with 16 points, and hit 10 of 14 free throws on the night.
"This team tonight, they are just so talented," Piggott coach Josh Robins observed of the Lady Warriors following the game.
The contest itself was much like the earlier meeting between the two. In the early going the Lady Mohawks were able to hang with the talented, and young, EPC squad. But in the second half it was all Lady Warriors, and a lot of Jordan Madden.
In fact, after trailing 10-15 at the end of the first quarter the Lady Mohawks went on a run and cut the lead to one point as they trailed 20-19. The Warriors then went on a 10-0 run of their own and went into the locker room at halftime up 30-19. In the third quarter EPC extended their lead to 43-26.
Late in the game, with the contest already in hand, Madden was allowed to stay in the contest by coach Bobby Lewellan in an effort to set a new personal high point game. Her 42 point performance is not only a personal best, but also eclipses the personal best of older sister Sade who once had a 41 point game. It is, of course, also the high point mark for the new gym.
Along with Engle's 16 points, the Lady Mohawks got 12 from Kenna Dennis, six from Michelle Greaney, five from Penny McCluskey, three from Hillary French, two from Natallie Branscum and one from Dana Emerson. As a team the Lady Mohawks made 16 free throws on 24 attempts, while the Lady Warriors were 18 of 25 from the charity stripe.
With the loss the Lady Mohawks fell to 4-9 overall and 3-6 in 3A-3 conference play. They were scheduled to visit Hughes Friday night and will host the Hoxie Lady Mustangs Monday night at PHS.
The Piggott seventh grade and junior girls also dropped their games to EPC Monday night. The seventh graders got four points each from Katie Moore, Mallory Wright and Kayla Morgan as they fell 15-21.
Meanwhile the junior girls dropped a 23-42 decision despite nine points from Chelsea Covarrubia and six points each from Allison Gurley and Mallory Wright. The junior Lady Warriors were led by Keyerai Young with 11.
With the loss the junior girls fall to 0-14 on the season, and they were scheduled to be back in action Friday night at Hughes.
