Darrell Vaughn, 71, of Piggott, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at the St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born Dec. 7, 1936, in Greenway. He was the son of the late Floyd A. and Thelma Simpson Vaughn.

He was united in marriage to Virginia Rogers on Nov. 12, 1960.

He was known for his many caring attributes. He was a die-hard Cardinal fan, but known in this community as the "friendly butcher." Vaughn began his career at IGA, and then moved to Rebel Market. After Rebel Market burned, he moved on to Taylor's Groceries. He then finished his career at Irby's Super Store. Overall, he had a 35-year career in providing good quality cuts of meat to people, who appreciated his craft. People came from Clay, Greene and Dunklin counties just to enjoy the quality of his food.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Joel Vaughn.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Vaughn of Piggott; two daughters, Melissa Engle and husband Greg of Piggott; Polly Fisk and husband Tim of Paragould, a son, Stacey Vaughn of Piggott; four grandchildren, Samantha Jones, Taryn Fisk, Jordan and Austin Engle; a great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Jones; a sister, Lawanda Chilcutt of Piggott, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 23, in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Joe Payne officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Cemetery, at Greenway. Pallbearers were Chad Taylor, Mike Eason, Neil Chilcutt, James Featherston, Ricky Haywood and Chuck Emerson. Honorary pallbearers were J.B. Featherston, Harold Piland, James Engle, Lester Edwards, Jerry Webster and Van Taylor.

Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.
