Proudly displaying new Jaws of Life equipment, purchased for the Rector Volunteer Fire Department through the efforts of the Rector Woman's Club, are, from left: Front - fireman Jason Martin, fire chief Huston Bowden and fireman David Jones. Back - fireman Steve Sigsby, Woman's Club members Diane Randleman and Deanie Wagster, Woman's Club president Glenna Bookout, Rector mayor Ron Kemp and Kenny Lee of Damascus, a representative of Leeco, Inc., which manufactures the Amkus Jaws of Life equipment. The Woman's Club raised more than $18,000 through the publication of a local cookbook and several other projects. The cookbook project was headed by Randleman, and Wagster has been in charge of the funds. The women also sought donations from individuals and businesses. Because the club exceeded its goal, it also hopes to purchase three airbags which can lift more than 77 tons.

The Rector Volunteer Fire Department now has the valuable Jaws of Life equipment available to save lives, thanks to generous donations and the tireless efforts of the Rector Woman's Club, which over the last several months raised more than $18,000 by seeking donations and through various community projects, including the publication of a community cookbook.

The purchase price of the equipment was $17,782, and because the club exceeded its goal, members also have the money to purchase a three airbag set which can lift up to 77 tons. The cost of the added equipment is $3,000.

"We never believed we could get the equipment in such a short period of time," said Fire Chief Huston Bowden. "The Firemen's Wives Auxiliary always has taken note of the needs of our firefighters. When the idea of the Jaws of Life was brought up, the goal was set for five years. The Rector Woman's Club became involved as a community project in January of last year."

"The citizens of Rector have shown an overwhelming response, to which we want to say thank you,'" said Auxiliary member Nita Bowden.
