Rector Babe Ruth team begins season

This year's Rector Senior Babe Ruth baseball season starts its season Thursday at Paragould. Their Coach James Parrish said, "We will be playing in the Paragould league. There will be five Paragould teams in the league plus Corning and us."

When asked about his team's prospects this season Coach Parrish replied, "If these kids play the kind of ball they are capable of playing, they should have a good chance to win the league championship. Our pitching should be a strong point. My top dog will be Billy Scott. He's still got it. Nathan Wyatt and Derrick Parrish should also carry a big load. Other pitchers will be Brian Arnold, Dewayne White and Dustin Bett. We are real deep in pitching.

"I believe I can also count on my hitters. The top of our order should be pretty tough. Derrick Parrish and Nathan Wyatt are good at making contact and getting on base. Bryan Arnold and, if he plays, Brandon Blount will provide us with some power. A couple of spots in the bottom of the order might be a little weak but even these weaker hitters can come through because they can bunt the ball well. If a player can advance base runners he can help his team.

"Defensively we should be ok. Derrick will see action at short and Nathan will be my main second baseman. Blount or Arnold will be behind the plate.

"I have two primary goals this year. One, I want the kids to have fun and two, I want to do my part to prepare these boys to win district in high school ball next year.

"I want my players to give their best. I believe in playing old school ball. If you don't dive for a ball on defense and there are players on the bench, you will quickly be sitting in the dugout.

"We play a 15 game season. Two of our games will be played in Rector. We have home games in Rector on June 9th and June 16th. These games will start at 5:45 p.m."
