Lady Greyhounds reach NEA semifinals
A spirited Lady Greyhound rally came up short Monday morning at the NEA Tournament in Jonesboro as they fell to the Lady Cardinals of Weiner 51-48.
The Lady Hounds were down 49-40 at the 1:54 mark of the final quarter after Weiner's Lauren Dale put an offensive rebound back in.
Lauren Wright hit two free throws for Marmaduke at 1:41 but only one of them was counted so the scoreboard read 49-41. Wright then connected on two more free throws at 1:28 that were counted, making the score 49-43.
After Weiner missed the front end of a one-and-one Wright swished a 3-pointer at 0:39 to make the score 49-46.
Both teams turned the ball over on their next possessions as the clock ran down. Finally a driving lay-up by Wright at 0:11 made it a one-point game at 49-48.
Forced to foul, the Lady Hounds fouled Micha Dale sending her to the free throw line for a one-and-one at 0:07. After she hit the first free throw Lady Hound Coach Matt Dean called time to hopefully freeze the Weiner shooter as she shot the second free throw. It didn't work! Dale casually connected on the second free throw giving Weiner a 51-48 lead.
With time running out Heather Johnson passed the ball to Wright who launched a 3-point attempt from the right side. The ball went in and out as the final buzzer sounded giving Weiner the hard fought win.
The Lady Hounds started out strong as they had a 16-4 lead at one point in the first quarter. Weiner came back behind five late quarter points by Phenix Butler to trail only 16-9 at the first frames end.
Weiner's defense only allowed the Lady Hounds to score four second quarter points as they came from behind to lead 27-20 at halftime. The Lady Hounds were hampered by Heather Johnson spending much of the second quarter on the bench after contact under the basket dropped her to the floor.
The third quarter was evenly played as Weiner still had a seven point lead, 37-30, when it ended.
Though exciting, the game was marred by three referees who didn't know what a foul was and by the fact that the scorekeeper didn't count one of Marmaduke's points.
Wright scored 24 points for Marmaduke, 14 in the final quarter. Johnson had 11 points. Terri Graham scored 6 points. Sarah Rogers had 4 points and Danielle Vincent made 3 points.
Butler led Weiner with 14 points and Kamri Mack added 11.
After the game Coach Dean said, "There were two good teams out there today and it's a shame that one of them had to lose. Weiner's defense gave us some problems in the second quarter and part of the third quarter but I am proud of the way my kids came back. We had a chance to tie at the end but Lauren's shot just didn't go in."
The Lady Hounds' record for the year now stands at 14-6
