Johnson scores 29 as Lady Hounds defeat River Valley in tourney quarterfinals
The Lady Greyhounds of Marmaduke easily defeated River Valley 64-50 in a quarterfinal game at the NEA Tournament Saturday morning in Jonesboro.
A Heather Johnson lay-up at 7:20 put the Lady Hounds up 2-0. Johnson then passed to Lauren Wright for another lay-up and a 4-0 lead.
After the Lady Rangers scored a basket to make it 4-2, Wright passed to an open Johnson whose three-pointer at 5:58 made it 7-2. Wright then hit a three-pointer herself at 5:25 to make the score 10-2 after receiving a pass from Danielle Vincent. Wright then passed Johnson whose lay-up made the score 12-2 at 4:51.
River Valley recovered somewhat but the Lady Hounds led 17-11 after one quarter. Johnson scored nine points in the first quarter. Johnson continued her superlative play in the second period as she scored 12 points in the frame, propelling the Lady Hounds to a 37-20 halftime lead.
The Lady Hounds maintained control of the game in the second half. They were up 52-32 going into the final period and they probably could have beaten River Valley by 30 if they had wanted to.
Johnson led the Lady Hounds with 29 points, 20 in the first half. Wright scored 13 points. Sarah Rogers had 10 points. Terri Graham scored six points and Vincent, Michelle DeFries and Autumn Hyten each scored two points.
The win left the Lady Hounds 14-5 for the year and allowed them the opportunity to advance to the semifinals of the NEA Tournament.
Lady Hound Coach Matt Dean said, "Heather had a real good first half. She really got us going early. As a team, this was one of our best defensive efforts of the year."
