Henry Dewayne Jackson

Henry Dewayne Jackson, 81, of Paragould, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at his old home place in the middle of the woods.

Born on Nov. 15, 1922, in Greene County, he was a believer in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Army.

Affectionately known as "Uncle Wayne" by many more than family, he loved his family, he valued his friends, and he enjoyed numerous little woodland friends that played at his door. He laughed a lot and loved to tell jokes.

He was an active member of the American Legion Post No. 17 and Masonic Lodge No. 368. He was an excellent marksman.

In the late 1950's, he created the political cartoon "Smedley Sez" for "The Big Picture," a Paragould daily newspaper. More recently, he painted the portraits of Dewey Dowdy and Norris Cathey that are displayed at the VFW Post No. 2242. He also painted the signs at the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellzena Ford and Lonnie Everrett Jackson, and two brothers, Leo Everrett Jackson and Vernon William Jackson.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Lucille Jackson of Paragould; three nieces and spouses, Leola and Sam Atchison, Lillian and Jerry White, Lee Carole and John Poe, all of Paragould; one nephew and spouse, Lonnie and Theresa Jackson of Batesville; six great-nieces and nephews; six step-great-nieces and nephews, and one step-great-great-niece.

Masonic graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector with Chaplain Ransom Walker officiating.

Masons acted at pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of the American Legion.

Memorials may be made to American Legion Post No. 17.
