She was born July 6, 1925, in Rector to the late Jesse and Grace Edwards and was married May 2, 1942, to Wayne McCartney.
Known affectionately as "Tene," she was the second child of three girls and three boys who grew up in the Hopewell community near Rector. For a brief time she and her husband lived in Memphis, where they embarked on a military life which resulted in frequent separation and moving from place to place, but family members said they found it both fulfilling and rewarding. Their travels took them from Maine to Turkey, to Colorado, back to Turkey, to Idaho, to Michigan and finally to Las Vegas in 1972, where Mrs. McCartney lived the remainder of her life.
She worked at Nellis Golf Course snack bar for 18 years spreading joy and her kindred spirit to everyone she met.
Survivors include her children, Deborah Schmidt of Tennessee Ridge, Tenn., and Jess McCartney of Las Vegas; two sisters, Marie Legault of Richardson, Texas, and Cleatis "Cleo" Bowman of Las Vegas; three brothers, Leslie Edwards of Cordova, Tenn., Oral Edwards of Forrest City and Robert Edwards of Auberry, Calif.; grandchildren, Jason, Jared, Clint and Corey Schmidt of Tennessee Ridge and five great-grandchildren.
A homegoing celebration is planned at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Rector with Bro. Alvin Parker, pastor of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, officiating.
Mrs. McCartney's ashes will be spread on the graves of her parents, Jesse and Grace Edwards, and her grandparents, Willie and Eliza Ann Edwards and Thomas and Eliza Jane Ahlf.
The family will attend church Sunday, Sept. 5, at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, where the Edwards children went while growing up.
