Rector girls downed by Tigers in conference play
The Rector Lady Cougars played host to the Lady Tigers from Maynard on Thursday, Jan. 13. Rector was downed by the visitors, 56-43.
Maynard was in control throughout, leading 17-12, 33-22 and 44-33 after the quarter breaks.
Lauren Faulkner and Natalie Sigsby scored all 12 of the Lady Cougars' first quarter points. Faulkner drained two from beyond the arc. Sigsby nailed two jumpers from the left baseline and finished with a turnaround jumper from the post.
Rector cut the Maynard lead to six with 2:38 left in the fourth after two free throws by Tylee Tracer and another three-pointer by Faulkner. Unfortunately, the Lady Cougars would score no more from that point on. The Lady Tigers scored the final seven points of the period.
Rector turned the ball over 24 times on the night, backing themselves into a corner offensively.
The Lady Cougars attempted 25 three-pointers, but made just six of them.
Rector sank 12 of 18 from the line, while Maynard made just 15 of their 28 free throw attempts.
"We knew they were going to push the basketball and hit the offensive boards," Lady Cougars coach Matt Rabjohn said. "We worked on it the last two or three days in practice.
"We're not physical. We keep coming out in games and acting like we're scared. We're young, but it's January -- it's time to quit being scared. Maybe we'll take something from this and hold on to it and use it later."
Despite dropping to a 4-5 conference record, Rector is still in the regional tournament hunt.
"The conference is still close," Rabjohn said. "Five or six wins could still get that four or five spot."
Faulkner's 11 points led the Lady Cougars. Jordan Cornelison added 10 on the evening. Other Rector scorers were Tracer 8, Sigsby 6, Abbe' McCarroll 4, Tara Shepard 2 and Haley Harmon 2.
Lindsey James scored 15 to lead Maynard.
The Junior Lady Cougars had a difficult time in their contest, as Maynard ran away with the game, 42-23. The Junior Lady Tigers were ahead after each quarter -- 13-6, 22-10 and 36-17.
Maynard opened the game up with an 8-0 run, before Allison Smart scored the first Rector points with a layup.
The Lady Cougars had no answer for Megan Flanagan, who scored 21 for the Lady Tigers.
The trapping Maynard defense helped cause 19 Rector turnovers.
"All night long it seemed like we'd come down the floor and then throw it away," Rabjohn said. "It's time to get over it and learn to handle the basketball.
"We didn't block out. We didn't hustle. It seemed like we were beat after the first quarter.
"We've got to penetrate and get to the free throw line, but to do that, we've got to hang on to the basketball."
Smart led the Junior Lady Cougars with 10 points. Also scoring were Hillary Calhoun 6, Hannah Parsley 5 and Racheal Gipson 2.
The Lady Cougars will host Piggott on Thursday, Jan. 20.
