Greyhounds finish second in Kell Classic
The Marmaduke Greyhounds faced the Rebels of Highland in the finals of the Kell Classic at Swifton on Saturday, Jan. 15. Marmaduke fell to the Rebels, 63-53. Highland led after each quarter -- 24-9, 39-23 and 50-31.
Marmaduke fell behind in the early going, not scoring during the first four minutes of the first period. The Rebels went on a 12-0 run during that time, giving themselves a good cushion for later in the game.
Marmaduke cut the Highland lead to nine late in the first half, but the Rebels answered back to take a 16-point lead into halftime.
"We ran into a very good Highland team," Marmaduke coach Steve Richey said.
"They came out and shot the ball extremely well early," assistant coach Shane Robinson said. "We missed some easy shots and it got us behind early. It was good for us to play a team like them."
John Clark finished with 15 points and 10 boards. Justin Ward also scored 15. Dane Boggs scored 9 and pulled down 10 rebounds. Other scorers were Nathan Haynes 5, Neal Thrash 5, Alex Ryan 2 and Mike Dobbins 2.
Mike Kish led Highland with 17 points.
Marmaduke will host BIC on Friday, Jan. 21.
Marmaduke faced the Corning Bobcats in the semifinals of the Kell Classic on Friday, Jan, 14. The Hounds won the hard-fought contest, 52-47. After trailing in the first half -- 12-9 and 23-20 -- Marmaduke took a 39-31 lead after the third quarter.
Dane Boggs and Neal Thrash scored all of their points in the second half to boost the Hounds over the Bobcats. Boggs finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Thrash added eight points.
"We played very well," Richey said. "Those were the most consistent four quarters we've played this season. I think Corning is probably the best overall team that we've played all year."
Nathan Haynes scored 10 points for Marmaduke. Other scorers were John Clark 5, Alex Ryan 5, Mike Dobbins 5, Aaron Reddick 3 and Justin Ward 2.
Justin Luverton led Corning with 17 points.
The Hounds played against Izard County Consolidated in the second round of the Kell Classic at Swifton on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Marmaduke held off a Cougar surge late, winning the game 60-58. The Greyhounds led throughout the game, posting leads at the end of each quarter -- 19-13, 34-21 and 50-38.
Marmaduke took a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter, but ICC's defensive pressure got them back into the game in the final minutes.
"We played real well for three quarters," Richey said. "We got out to a pretty good lead. We had some turnovers in the fourth quarter and missed some easy shots. They were able to get back into the game."
John Clark posted a double-double for the Hounds, scoring 21 and ripping down 11 rebounds. Justin Ward added 12 points. Other scorers were Nathan Haynes 8, Dane Boggs 6, Alex Ryan 6, Aaron Reddick 5 and Neal Thrash 2.
Justin Burns scored 24 points, including six three-pointers, to lead the Cougars.
