Wednesday, December 7, 2005

The Rector Cougars brought home their first victory of the season this past Friday with a 64-40 triumph over the Oak Ridge Central Roadrunners in Ravenden Springs. Rector led throughout: 16-13, 37-19 and 56-30.

The Cougars were paced by the hot shooting of freshman guard Jackie Graham, 23 points, and senior guard Jake Holcomb, 21 points. Holcomb rained down bombs from deep in the game, connecting on seven three-point shots. Other scorers were Aaron Morris 8, Jase Speer 4, Derek Wyss 2, Andrew Hill 2, Brantley Terry 2 and Michael Gossett 2.

The Cougars were effective on the defensive end, denying Oak Ridge Central many open looks at the basket and keeping them out of their offensive gameplan.

"We played well," Cougar coach Mark Manchester said. "We needed a win and we got it. Jake Holcomb shot the ball well for us. I thought we did a good job on the defensive end. I'm proud of the way my guys played."

The Cougars will host Manila at 7 p.m. this Friday.

Junior High

The Junior Cougars gutted out a close contest with young Roadrunners, winning 38-34. Rector held an 11-9 advantage after the first quarter before trailing 15-14 at the half. The game was tied at 24 each going into the final frame.

The young Cougars received a good effort from their starting five, all of whom scored in the contest. Rector's balanced offensive attack made the difference, as only three Roadrunners scored on the night.

Blake Evers led Rector with 11 points. Other scorers were Blake McCarroll 9, Garrett Evers 6, Logan Buck 6 and Dalton Shaw 6.

Ryan King led Oak Ridge Central with 14.

Pre-Holiday Tournament

The Junior Cougars were downed 38-12 in their matchup with Westside in the first round of the Pre-Holiday Tournament at Harrisburg. Westside held the advantage throughout: 15-1, 21-5 and 25-10.

"We didn't play very well," Manchester said. "We didn't shoot the ball well. We never really could get into any sort of flow on the offensive end. We stepped up defensively in the second half, but our offense never got going."

Shaw led Rector with 7 points. Garrett Evers finished with 3 while McCarroll added 2.

Trevor Moore led Westside with 10 points.
