1968

The school year was drawing to a close 40 years ago this week. Piggott High would hold their junior-senior banquet and prom May 17 and baccalaureate services May19 with graduation set for May22. This year's valedictorian at PHS is Robert Fry Jr. and salutatorian is Susan Throgmorton. Meanwhile Greenway High School will graduate 25 seniors May 17.

Gus Camp, president of the Sugar Creek Country Club, gave an update to the Lions Club at their recent meeting. The club now has 155 members, of which 135 are active.

The rumored closing of the local General Telephone business office was made official this past week as the company reported that the facility would indeed close effective June 7. In other local business news, Hamra's Department store advertised that they now accept BankAmeriCard, "the new way to buy on credit."

Three PHS students will be attending "Boy's State" this summer, they are Joe LItz, Eddie Winberry and Harry Niewald. Meanwhile, junior high cheerleaders for the coming year were announced, they are--Barbara Hughes, Holly Litz, Gayla Nicholas, Becky Rogers, Vickie Graddy, Dianna Hughes and Pam Bradford.

Champions of the ladies Thursday night bowling league this year is the Piggott Farmer's Gin team, members included JohnNell Cullum, Mary Taylor, Ramona Magee, Joan Dyson and Naomi Orey.

1978

The city of Piggott applied for a block grant 30 years ago this past week, if approved the money will be used for streets, drainage and recreation purposes. The recreation effort will include a new swimming pool and tennis court complex. In other news, Arkansas Attorney General Bill Clinton will visit Piggott may 19 for a "Clinton for Governor" rally..Piggott kindergarten students visited the post office at Seal's Pharmacy..and parents were reminded of a crackdown going on to prevent underage driving.

Graduation at PHS is set for the coming week, this year's valedictorian is John Lee while the salutatorian is Dennis Blake. Meanwhile, the First Christian Church and First Presbyterian Church each held Mother-daughter banquets in the past week.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "Casey's Shadow" while the late show was "Sex and the French Schoolgirl".

In sports, Renea Landrum and Eddie Rogers of PHS competed in the state track meet at Ouachita Baptist on May 6, with Renea taking third in the discus and Eddie finishing seventh in the two mile run. In other sports news, Scot Sale and Terry Crawford won the championship flight at the annual two man scramble at Sugar Creek Country Club.

1983

Graduation for the class of '83 was at hand 25 years ago this week. This year's valedictorian at PHS was Valerie Crossfield and Karen Cox was salutatorian. Meanwhile, Decoration Day at Cummins Chapel is set for May 22 and the Piggott Chamber of Commerce held their regular meeting recently and heard an update from Piggott schools superintendent Dr. Perry Hope.

Piggott Lodge #545 hosted a ceremony May 9 as Bernice Osburn (B.O.) Dalton received his 50 year pin and lifetime membership card. The presentation was made by lodge secretary J.D. Ellis. In other news, Gerald Hoggard announced that members of the Piggott Cemetery Assoc. would meet May 30 at the Dixie Donut Shop to discuss plans for this year's picnic.

Recent births to announce include Ashley Gail Poole, born to Jim and Pat Poole on May 3, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital..and Drew Keith Woolverton, born to Keith and Sabrina Woolverton on May 6, at Doctor's Hospital in Poplar Bluff.

At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "High Road to China" while the late show feature is "Titillation". And KAIT reported that they were to become one of the first TV stations in the country to have a newsroom computer system, which should be operational by Sept. 1.

1988

The city opened bids for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant 20 years ago last week, with the low bid coming in at $1.282 million. Meanwhile, Charles Hinkle reported that the Rebel Market would re-open despite the fire of March 30. The owner of the building, Floy Stewart, is planning to re-build. Stewart also now owns the Carolyn Theater building and plans to tear it down to provide additional parking

In other news, Kyle Seal and Donna Breckinridge won the oratory contest at Piggott Middle School, and a feature article highlighted the efforts of local artisan Wayne Mowery and the work he had done over the past ten years in the monument business. Mowery's custom etching can still be seen on monuments in cemeteries all across the region.

An overview of the state's schools was also reported. The Piggott District was 110 out of 334 in size, and averaged about 977 students. Corning was 76th with an average of 1,417 students and Clay County Central was 131st with an average of 841. The Piggott district comprised about 150 square miles and we ranked 320 out of 334 in per-pupil spending at $1,979. CCC was about 179 square miles and ranked 265th in spending at $2,147 while Corning was about 316 square miles and ranked 213th in spending at $2,244 per pupil.

And in sports, the men's softball team sponsored by Piggott State Bank beat Poplar Bluff 3-1 to win the Rector Tournament recently…and extend their record to14-4. Team members include--Stewart Prevallet, Kevin Ward, Troy Jenkins, Paul Wade Jr., Rocky Jenkins, Roger Cale, Randy Jackson, Scot Sale, Barry Hite, Tony Johnson, Jeff Howell, Todd Watson, Jim McGrew and Brock Swann.
